Everything was fine except for the food – lacked flavour. When paying $23 for a plate of pasta you expect there to be some sort of creativity added to the meal, but it was just a plate of boiled store-bought penne with some tomato based sauce slopped over it and a few measly pieces of meat.
A little more casual compared to Salt but none the less good selection of items. I ordered the special which were the scallops. Scallops in NZ are quite small aren’t they? Anyhow, it was delicious and service was great.
Overall a great experience. When we arrived we were told it would be a 45 minute wait to be seated as the place was packed out – a good sign that it was a popular place – so we took a seat on the couch while we ordered a drink and garlic bread to start. Not long after our drinks arrived we were promptly seated at our table much to our delight. Unfortunately they had run out of salmon for the night, so my partner and I ordered the fish of the day which was blue cod dolloped with paprika mayo with seasonable veges and wedges. The meal was very tasty although unfortunately my fries were rather under cooked which was a bit of a let down. But the service was friendly and fast, food pretty tasty and reasonably priced. Would definitely go there again if I am back in town.
We were very disappointed. The pumpkin soup was under seasoned and the vegetarian risotto was a disaster, with some portions under cooked and chalky, and other parts cooked to mush. We realize they specialise in sea food, but if it’s on the menu you expect it to be better than the offering that was presented to us.
when visiting Whitianga in May 2011 on the suggestion of our B&B owner, after reading the two reviews, we decided to dine at Squid. We were greeted cheerfully as soon as we walked in. Our shared starter of local smoked fish was delicious, the mains jambalaya and fish of the day which was bluenose were tasty, well presented and we felt value for money. If you’re in Whitianga go there.
Great food, great price. Would definitely do it again. 🙂 4.5 stars
