Have been here a couple of times and been well impressed but today we were very disappointed. The additional bacon we added to the eggs on toast was burnt black and and inedible, we were offered a refund but didn’t receive it. The salmon salad I was looking forward to after previous renditions that were amazing, was a bowl full of chopped cos lettuce with a mismatched pickle and packet smoked salmon. I can only imagine that it has changed hands and the passion and care is no longer there What a pity used to be a fav!!
I’ve worked right around the corner from this place for many years and have had numerous delicious coffees from the place, but never gone for food. This all changed yesterday when I finally decided to go out for breakfast, and wow was I impressed! Staff were super friendly and the big breakfast in had was one of the best I’ve experienced in Hamilton.I will definitely be returning.
Background information for our Reviews: My husband and I (early 40s with 3 kids) are fortunate enough to have grandparents in town. We both love eating out, so therefore we try to ditch the kids and get out whenever possible. The reviews we write are our (subjective) opinion based on that day’s experience, so obviously can vary greatly depending on staffing/food etc on the particular day. On this particular day, we went out for lunch at Hazel Hayes. The staff were helpful and friendly and despite it being fairly full, managed to get a table. We both ordered the Hazel breakfasts which were good value as we had a grabone deal. I wouldn’t have paid $23 each for them however, but they were tasty, unfortunately only just luke warm though. The coffee however, was burnt and tasted awful. We have previously had good coffee here so asked for a replacement. Unfortunately, it was just as bad the second time around. Both sets of our cutlery had baked on egg which was a disappointment also. Will we go back? Probably, yes, as I’m hoping this was a one- off.
I used to love hazel hayes but now I feel that the menu is quite limited. Still quite a large cabinet selection though and I quite like their hash balls.
this wasn’t our first time at this cafe and it certainly will not be our last. I am always kind of surprised and slightly amazed by the friendliness of the staff. normally cafe staff on a Saturday are always grumpy and unhelpful but not at this place. it is a funky retro cafe, good coffee. I however found the coffee a bit cold for my liking, however was probably standard heat and I should have asked for hotter coffee also I got cinnamon on my cappachino wich I didn’t ask for, but once again probably should have asked for chocolate sprinkle. This all is quite irrelevant if you take the food in consideration because today I had the tastiest salad I have ever had.. nothing compares to it. was the broccoli brussel sprouts and Tom Yum salmon.. OMG seriously. my partner had the Hazel Hayes breakfast and was equally happy, included perfectly poached eggs.. Thank you guys for a great establishment in a city with pretty average Cafes.
Loved the vegan dish here. It was super tasty and something different! Thank you for thinking outside of the box! Unfortunately no longer traveling to Hamilton so only got to try it once. But highly recommend!
Every since having Hazel Hayes cater the Ball, I have been waiting for the time to trial their cafe! Went for desert on a quiet day and first impression was their style of displaying the sweets was unique! We got a cheesecake ($4) and a P&B white choc slice ($4). Both were immensely delicious! I can’t even decide which was better! They were small, hence the cheap price, HOWEVER, I would much prefer spending a small amount of money for a small portion of desert. This way I don’t get sick from the sweetness and I can trial more! The decoration was beautiful too! Loved all the bright colours! Even the bathroom was beautiful, they had hand TOWELS rather than paper towels! Beautifully stored and good for the environment too! Staff were lovely also! Oh and their cutlery/plates were beautiful!Looking forward to coming back and trying their lunch menu!!
