Great food and big portions at a very reasonable cost. I love their pâté. It’s a great place to hang out and take you time to read the newspaper
Cahoots is a special little place. I’ve come here with my partner for two things. The coffee is never a let down and the Paté is AMAZING! Highly recommend the place for break-lunch!
Poor service , man on till chewing gum/food. Coffee taste like water, poorly extracted . Very unclean and obviously no customer service skills, was being quite rude to people in front of us. Wouldnt give half sized milk shake to a child. Would not go back !!
You possibly have to be a local to really appreciate cahoots. It’s like an old pair of slippers – pretty well used but you’d never want it to change. All of the staff are characters and although at times you might feel intimidated – don’t be – they are priceless. The barista is quiet, the guy who runs the place can look grumpy, his missus is lovely, and they had, unfortunately (and I mean that) now gone, one of the most abusive waiting staff I’ve ever known – but everyone has a good sense of humour. There are a couple of eating spaces – the main one by the counter and a very basic addition that keeps the weather off and through that, a small outside seating area. However its worth sitting by the counter just to listen to the banter between locals and staff. The coffee is always good – the quiet one knows how to make good coffee and the food never fails to please. My go to is a takeaway coffee and the bacon butty (they’ll usually make a fresh one if run out) – the big breakfast is a good solid start to the day. Although the michelin inspector isn’t likely to call anytime soon, I’d rate this place very highly – the individual components of service and ambience may not score highly if you took them out of context, but, the atmosphere together with the food, as a complete package is priceless.Yes some of the plants are terminal, yes it’s chaotic, but hopefully it won’t change one bit (and hopefully not a spring clean) for a long time. A Wairarapa classic
We have been wanting to try this place for a while – since seeing the Rob Pfeffer review here. I remember in about 2003 the place had awesome sandwiches but I cannot recall if it was the same owners or name. I suspect not. My first impression of the place is that it needs a damn good spring clean – it’s not unsanitary but could be a lot tidier (especially the outdoor smoker’s area at the back). We sat there because it seemed quieter, not to actually smoke, and there was no one else out there. There were random cardboard boxes on the ground and the door to the loos kept flying open. Kitchen noise was prominent. There were a lot of dead pot plants that should have been thrown out ages ago. The staff were very pleasant but there was quite a wait for our meals – I had the Cahoots mixed grill & a pot of tea, hubby had the eggs benny & a banana milkshake. The portion fitted the pricing and everything was cooked satisfactorily. It was all very bog standard – neither terrible nor outstanding. Might go back, might not.My husband’s point of view is as follows:Yesterday we drove from Lower Hutt with the specific intentions of brunch at Cahoots, and getting out into some sun.Service at the counter was good, if a little flustered. Orders were placed for an Eggs Bennie with sides of bacon and hash browns with a banana milkshake, and a ‘Cahoots’ big breakfast with English breakfast tea. $42.00 all-up which seemed reasonable and a nice change from the ‘big city’ prices.Finding somewhere to sit was an adventure as the tables were a mish-mash of sizes and the seats ranged from those that you would be happy to have in your home to a $9.99 for a pack-of-six plastic seats that you buy for a New Year’s Eve party that don’t matter if they get broken. We moved to the outside smoking area (as indicated by the still-full ashtrays) to a more comfortable table in a quieter area. The environment here was not that good. There’s ‘neglected’ in a certain clean, arty way and there’s ‘neglected’ in a can’t-be-bothered-cleaning-this week way, and this appeared to be the latter. The wooden structures were dirty and cobwebs abounded, cardboard boxes lying around that should have been in a bin and as mentioned the ashtrays were still full from presumably the day before. But it was quieter than inside so we sucked it up.Eventually the food arrived, and it was ok. One of my two eggs was overcooked and hard, which is a cardinal sin on an Eggs Bennie, though the rest of it was ok. The missus was reasonably happy with hers; she said the mushrooms were excellent though the sausages were ‘dry and wizzened’. She was happy with the quality and quantity of her tea, and my ‘shake was pretty good too.We ate and left straight after. Not really an environment for a relaxing wind-down after eating.
This Cafe looks nice from the outside , don’t be fooled. The staff there have a terrible attitude and the coffee is pretty average. There are plenty of alternatives in Greytown.
Yuck! We tried Cahoots last Sunday and will NEVER be going back. It was mid afternoon so it wasn’t unexpected that the kitchen was closed, but I do wish we had taken that as a sign and left. We ordered toasted sandwiches, which for $6 each I expected something reasonably tasty. After waiting around 20 minutes what we received were two soggy toasted sandwiches made with sandwich bread (again for $6 you would expect something slightly better). Along with our food was a knife wrapped in a napkin, but whoever had been responsible for doing the cutlery must have had dirty hands as there was food smeared into both napkins at the seal. Yuck. The whole place had a grubby feel and the table we sat at was dirty also. I wish we had gone down the road to the White Swan!
