Nine of us went for lunch today and what a disappointment. We waited for 40 minutes for our food and we were still starving hungry afterwards because the portions were tiny. And not cheap either! I asked for the wedges with bacon and cheese but asked them to hold the bacon. For $14 I got about 8 wedges with a drizzling of microwaved cheese and a tiny dollop of sweet chilli sauce. My sister in law asked for a side salad. She got a quarter slice of cucumber, three slithers of carrot and a leaf of lettuce. We will not be going here again. Such a shame as it is a great location and cute cafe. Overpriced and undelivered.
Waiting ages for a venison and vegetable pie to the point my boyfriend had already finished his eggs Benedict. The waitress was very apologetic but then sadly they gave me the beef pie instead. She also stated that she would give me a free dessert as an apology but this was never followed up. Disappointing and wouldn’t recommend
Having recently reopened after a refurb thought I would stop in for lunch on my through. On arrival I was warmly greeted by the friendly staff who looked to be run off their feet, headed for a table in the sun out the back. Was served promptly and ordered a soy latte and the corn fritters with bacon. The coffee came quickly and was very good, my fritters were well cooked and seasoned just so. The chutney served with them was excellent. All in all I would go back however wasn’t a knock out
Went for brunch with three girlfriends on Sunday morning. It was disastrous and probably one of the worst brunch experiences any of us had ever had. Our waitress was so quiet and insipid it was actually uncomfortable trying to engage with her. We ordered coffees first up, which were average at best. Two of our party ordered a large size coffee and after a considerable wait we were told that ‘they were just waiting on some people to finish their drinks so they could reuse the large cups’. Our first choice of meal (potato cakes with poached egg and smoked salmon) was unavailable due to the cafe running out of potato cakes. We ordered our second choices and after at least a 40 minute wait we flagged down the waitress and asked her to check the status of our food order. She said she thought it was coming soon and disappeared for another ten minutes. No communication, no apologies when she eventually delivered our food – just placed on the table in silence. The meals were abysmal – The eggs benedict was the worst I have ever seen served up in a cafe. Two slices of white bread with anemic and grossly overcooked eggs and a slice of bacon dumped on top. So bland and poorly presented, and badly cooked at that. Corn fritters were dry and came sans the relish that was specifically asked about. The mushrooms described in the other meal were missing from the plate with no explanation. We ate some of the food only because we had been waiting so long we were starving. No salt and pepper on table. No offer of water for the table. We were looking forward to brunching out and felt completely disappointed. It was such a lacklustre and quite frankly uncomfortable experience. We gave feedback to the lady at the front counter who to her credit handled it very well and seemed genuinely quite sad. She explained that the business was being sold and the current owners were not stocking the place as it was being taken over on Tuesday. Boy did that show, there was not an ounce of love in the place. Perhaps this place will improve under new ownership but on the strength of my experience on Sunday I would advise against visiting the Main Street Deli. Plenty of other good places to eat in the Wairarapa!
I dislike getting up early. I dislike feeling overly tired all day because I’ve had to wake at 4 to make a 6am flight. Usually what perks me up is a good coffee and a tasty breakfast. And that’s what I had here. My coffee what very very good, and served quickly. I should have taken note of the brand of beans they used. My food, the Deli Breakfast, was excellent. Two poached eggs on toasted loaf a gorgeous sausage and lovely eye bacon. I wasn’t expecting balsamic mushrooms but they were cut chunky how I like them. If I was a regular visitor to the Wairarapa I’d stop again and it looked better than the other places I past in Graytown. Very nice place, lovely people.
Rude service! The woman spotted us but continued washing windows but then sneered at us asking us (without greeting us) if we wanted menus and no eye contact!! This woman should be banned from service. No courtesy, no manners, no greeting. Wish I had read the reviews before taking my custom there. How do these people stay in business? I also went into the deli the day before and there was nobody to serve me and just about nothing in the chiller to choose from. Stay away peeps!
Great coffee, the cafe is nice and cosy.Good food and the staff very accommodating.Making additions to my croissant and serving a delicious onion jam on the side.I’ve stopped here a number of times over the last 3 years and this place is consistently good.
