What a disastrous place. About 30 of us recently went there for lunch. A booking was made about a month ahead and we were offered a fixed menu with a choice of 3 mains and 2 desserts. Our orders were taken on the bus and phoned through to the Hotel. They were advised our ETA was 12 noon and we did arrive at that time. We were seated around tables in the bar. There was an open fire but the wood was wet and there was little heat – it was winter. In spite of the fact that there were two staff around the bar, other than water no table service was offered for alcohol. It was necessary to go to the bar yourself for a drink. Well, we waited and waited but it was not until 1.15p.m. that the food started to appear – a wait of an hour and quarter. Service was not completed til 1.30p.m. We complained naturally during the wait, but the male wait boy – god was he rude and arrogant. One of the mains was supposed to be Wairarapa lamb. It was grossly overcooked and dry and in parts black. To be fair, the fish was OK according to those who ordered it. Next the dessert. After a further half hour wait and no signs of dessert we decided enough was enough. The trip organizer offer to pay only for the main which was accepted, and we left. There was a Probus group in another dining area. We spoke with the organizer for that luncheon and she advised that it was the worst of many that she had organized over her years in Probus. We have made several attempts to contact management since this fateful day but to no avail. My advice is if you are going to Greytown then avoid the White Swan like the plague.Even a rating of one is far too generous – a minus 10 would be better.

Great meal!Food was nice and the dessert was amazing! Has to be by far the best dessert in greytown by a country mile! I will definitely be back.

Great set up, excellent venue but boy the food is not ideal. We ordered the salt and pepper squid which came out in a thick crumbed batter. Tought calamari inside and a bitter dipping sauce. Although the burger was good the chips on the side were limp and sad. Service was good but will not be returning for anything food wise.

We’ve wanted to try here for years but the opportunity has never really presented itself. Staying in Martinborough for the weekend we made sure to make a visit. We decided to sit inside. Dining area open and tables had a good amount of separation. We ordered the Rose Brut and a Big Sky Pinot noir. Both were superb. The menu didn’t grab me that night, nothing really stood out to me.We skipped entire opting for main and desert. I ordered the slow cooked lamb on quinoa salad. My partner the steak. The steak was a simple dish; potatoes, green beans with plenty of garlic butter. It was tasty but the steak was a little chewy. Still enjoyable though. The lamb dish was huge and a bit mismatched for my taste. The lamb was a fraction on chewy side. Unfortunately it was amongst the salad which I found bland. There was far too much of it too. I found it to be a confusing dish which didn’t quite work.Deserts we ordered the lemon tart and the chocolate nemesis. Both sweet and rich. The chocolate particularly decadent. Very enjoyable. Our waitress was lovely, really made us feel welcome. It was a real shame the mains didn’t hit the spot. We did enjoy our visit but left feeling a bit disappointed by the mains. And given the cost we expected better. All up $120.00.

I enjoyed a fab meal in the dining room over the long weekend with my two daughters. The food was just divine, and we had a lovely experience. However, please makeover the makeover – and whatever you do don’t attack the gorgeous bedrooms in the same way. The artwork in the dining room was beautiful but the lovely paintings are swallowed by the awful dung colour that covers not just the walls but the ceiling and window frames as well. The atmosphere is stifling and oppressive. The only break in colour for the eye was the red Chinese lanterns for Chinese New Year. Please return to a lovely unique, fresh and irresistible look like you had. At the moment it feels like a bad version of what you can find anywhere else – plus it appears to have no link to anywhere else in the building. This look does not lure in those looking for somewhere special. The saving grace as the food itself. Please compliment the chef and keep on with the delicious food. Helen C

Sadly I cannot comment on the taste of the meals as after waiting an hour for our lunch, we went to ask if it was coming soon, only to be told they had not started cooking ours yet. Needless to say I will not be back. We were not even offered an apology. Terrible service.
