I have been meaning to try Hiakai for some time as I admire and applaud Monique Fiso’s approach to using traditional Māori ingredients in a modern way. This approach is consistent with the Māori world view of looking back to the past to inform the future.I was in Wellington for a conference, so I booked a table for four and we went for the eight course menu with wine/alcohol match.A photo of our menu is attached so I won’t describe each course.Basically each course builds on the taste and the texture of the previous one. The outstanding courses were the Pork Belly and the hokey pokey ice cream. We were less convinced by the green lipped mussel ice cream dish – yes you read that right. The atmosphere was intimate but formal and we liked the fact that you could see into the kitchen. In summary the menu had splashes of genius and a few dishes that missed the mark. Monique is young and still fine tuning her art and she will continue to improve. I will be watching her career with interest.Give her restaurant a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised – but be warned, it’s expensive.
