We are staying close and always enjoy tasty, fresh Thai food. Royal Thai’s pad Thai was very good but all the appetisers smelt and tasted like they had been cooked in beef fat. The smell was over whelming and we were unable to eat the spring rolls and prawns as the taste of beef fat was all we could taste. As non-red meat eaters we were so disappointed. Everything went in the bin except the pad thai. Very disappointed.
I went to Royal Thai for the first time on Saturday night with a group of 12. We were seated at a nice round table. The staff were so helpful and friendly. They even sung happy birthday to the birthday girl with us. For starters my friends and I shared the prawn, the chicken puffs and the vege puffs. They were all nice but the prawn was by far my favourite. For my main I got the cashew nut chicken which was pretty good (although it won’t exactly blow your mind). A main and a starter came to about $25 which I think is very reasonable for the quality. Bonus points for being the best BYO I’ve been to in Wellington. TLDR: pretty good food, pretty good price. Royal Thai is a great place for a quiet dinner in the city. Unlike most Thai places which are over-crowded with high humidity, Royal Thai don’t cramp the tables together. The food is also exceptional and I would say the best Thai in Wellington. I have been here several times before and on each occasion the staff have been very friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable and it is also BYO. The massaman curry is probably the best i’ve ever had. The pad thai is also very good. I really recommend this place and can’t really fault it. Although it doesn’t quite compare to Thai Me Up in Auckland, it definitely comes in a very close second.
