I had the salmon and EVERYTHING was off, asparagus must have been canned and was soggy. Potatoes were half wet mush and half uncooked. The bernaise sauce just tasted weird. The salmon was edible but the skin had been soaked into the wet potato. Plenty of simple things to change in that dish to improve it. Otherwise service was great and beer was good.

A basic little cafe in newtown. Not grungy, not modern, black tables, wooden chairs and banquette seating – walls cream paint over bad plaster, old wooden ceilings – could do with a bit more love / effort.Saturday breakfast – 11.30am – 30% full. Coffee (karamu) – two trim caps were excellent – perfect texturing, good depth of flavour, no bitterness.Service friendly and accurate.Bacon, tomato and black pudding: nicely presented. Bacon – excellent flavour, well cooked but on the small side. Black pudding – good quality pudding – good flavour , well cooked but on the thin side as the frying tended to dry out the interior. Tomatoes – ok, but not terribly flavoursome or juicy. The imperfections sound worse than they were – I enjoyed the breakfast and apart from the tomatoes the cafe seems to source good ingredients.Overall very good breakfast, with excellent coffee and service.

We came across the Riddiford while walking into Wellington city from Newtown. We wanted a no fuss cafe that had good food and this is exactly what we got – except with a lot more class. It’s located on a busy main road opposite the hospital. The Riddiford actually gives off a bit more of a restaurant feel, not that that’s a bad thing, and the decor is NZ focused but very nice.I ordered scrambled eggs on toast with a side of sausages, hubby ordered the same except with poached eggs and bacon and my sister ordered simple scrambled eggs on toast. My sisters fiancée ordered two quiches from the display unit – which I completely missed coming in to the cafe, and is actually full of some amazing goodies, so make sure you check that out!My eggs and sausages were delicious, the eggs were cooked perfectly, and the sausages were browned nicely to have a tiny bit of a crunch -yum! Hubby’s bacon was delicious, whatever kind of bacon they’re using is top-notch and I want some in my kitchen, stat! It was also crispy, without being asked for crispy – win win! I didn’t get a chance to taste the quiches but they looked really juicy (are quiches allowed to be juicy?) and there were praises to be had about them.Great stop in cafe if you are in the area, the coffee was alright too!

Really yummy. We had the english breakfasts and brought our 13 month old with us. Staff were really great and went out of there way to make us feel comfortable with our little one. Gave us a little fork for him (adorable and just what he wanted) and they’ve got a great little highchair that is adjustable and can sit close to the table. The coffee and food were great. The squashed potatoes on the breakfast were my fav, so good. And finally somewhere that does the tomatoes right – not under cooked or soggy. The most important thing for me is the service which was fantastic, staff were friendly and just really great about our little guy who just wanted to get into everything. Thanks for a tasty and relaxing breakfast.

Went here with a group of 8 for brunch. Coffee was excellent, as was the service. The food did take a while to come out (over 40 minutes) at 11am on a Wednesday morning, which was a downside, especially seen it was not busy. My pulled pork sandwich was tasty, but if I was being picky, it was a little dry. The homecut fries were amazing. Some peoples poached eggs were over cooked, as well as the black pudding, who ordered the big breakfast.Overall a nice brunch, with some small points to work on.
