Enjoyed a delicious cappuccino here in the shared space where Milk Crate sits. The cabinet selection of sandwiches and sweet treats look fresh and a little different from standard cafe fare. Architecturally, it’s an inviting spot, with wood paneling and ceiling feature to offset the grey polished concrete. Brightly painted feature walls in line green and terracotta bring a freshness to compliment the good quality wooden seating and tables. There’s not a lot seating available, but what there is includes small wall-hung tables for 2, that you could drag a chair over from the large communal table to make room for 3. There’s also a bar table with high stools, facing the passing traffic and pedestrians, and also some outside seating too.The shared space has handmade, high end, leather goods and fine pottery pieces that are quite fabulous (if you love stuff like that, and I do!)

Milk crate is one of my favorite coffee shops!I love the quirky minimalistic vibe and, of course, their coffee. The cabinet food looks yum but only tried once, which is the red velvet cake-ish, which is an okay. The baristas were nice and friendlyAnd they are such a good place to read your favorite books!

I hate to rate milk crate so lowly because I really went there expecting it to be good. It has that quiet independent hipster cafe vibe that I want to be good but it just didn’t live up to expectations.First issue for me was the lack of caramel syrup, something which is pretty standard in most Wellington cafes, and prevented me from getting my favourite caramel latte. Instead I ordered tea, of which they have a wide range, and was nice, however not being able to order my favourite, pretty basic drink was a disappointment. My other issue is the lack of cabinet food. When we went in the early afternoon (around 2pm) there were literally 2 items left in the cabinet, one of which was snapped up by my mate, leaving only one option (which I didn’t like, thus didn’t purchase) for me. I would’ve liked to have something to eat, but due to the lack of options, wasn’t able to do so.The coffee my friend had was supposedly very good though, and the atmosphere with the indoor outdoor flow was very nice for an afternoon chat and catch up.Milk crate is a lovely place which I would definitely consider coming back to at some point, however I would not return if it dissappointed me again.

RecommendedI actually went into Milk Crate to buy a coffee, I’d become so disheartened with tea in coffee-focussed cafes that I thought MC would be of little interest. Fortunately my partner spied a row of Japanese teapots, and a row of brightly coloured unfamiliar looking tins of tea beneath them. We asked whether they had black teas other than English breakfast. I was expecting the usual “Earl Grey and some delicious flavoured teas” but no … “Yes we do”, and the delightfully helpful young lady at the counter proceeded to show us a menu of teas from “Tearroir”. It would be an understatement to say that I was surprised … I was speechless. Here were Indian Assam and Darjeeling, a Gangnam green tea from South Korea, a Taiwanese oolong, a Pu’er, and of course a Ceylonese Earl Grey and an Indian “English” breakfast tea. Praying that the making would live up to my new expectations I ordered the Assam, my partner a trim cap, and we shared a ham and cheese roll. I was asked whether I wanted milk but not the type. The assam loose leaf was added to the built-in sieve of a cute Japanese tea pot. Brewed with boiling water from the La Marzocco. After about 4-5 minutes it came already brewed and sieve removed with a warm thick-walled ceramic cup along with cold milk in a nice little black jug.It poured a reasonably good colour, slightly pale but only marginally so. Good aroma, mild pleasant astringency, good depth of flavour, one of the first ‘real cups of tea’ I’ve tasted over the past couple of months. It was of sufficient body and interest to rival coffee. On my tea scoring system (see my Astoria review) I gave Milk Crate 24/30, well ahead of the current leaders (Louis Sergeant and Clark’s on 19, Kilbirnie’s The Little teapot and Silverstream’s The Fig Leaf Cafe on 18 and both Le Maquis and Chocolate Frog on 17). The coffee was excellent, well made, nicely textured, good flavour and unburnt. The roll – I must confess to a long association with milk crate’s ham and cheese rolls. I’ve watched them change slightly over the years but are always good. Excellent bread, ham, Emmental, gherkin and mayo. Delicious. So for tea – Milk Crate is the real deal – so far the best in town!

Milk crate is one of my favourite coffee shops in Wellington! The service here is always fast and friendly, and I love the big open space. The smoothies here are also really good! I’ve never tried any of the cabinet food but it looks really good, so will definitely be back to try some!

They don’t do breakfast? There is a menu on here but they weren’t serving on the day I went. Coffee was really good, strong but not bitter. Cute little cafe but really needs breakfast..

If the Wellington vibe was to be a cafe Milk Crate on Ghuznee Street would have to be it.Close to the famous Cuba Street it doesn’t take long for you to stubble across this Wellington gem. Up and running for nearly 6 years now, Milk Crate as become well-known for serving up hunger busting baguettes and their Egg and Spinach Sandwich is said to be one of their best. At this point Wellington had me fill but there’s always room for another coffee. Milk Crate brews fair trade coffee which is a step in the right direction and becoming a popular move for a lot of local brewers. The staff are young and vibrant which makes you’re experience all the better. Full of local knowledge and friendly to new comer’s (me), I was told Milk crate has a lot regular costumers and they see themselves as a community space rather than just a cafe. If I lived down in Wellington, I’d become a regular for sure. The friendly vibe and handy location make this space perfect for a coffee fuel up or quick a bite to eat!Sarah Reynolds #Challenge twodarkcoffees.com
