I happened to be in Wellington on Christmas Eve when the whole town was deserted and all restaurants and bars were shut. After a long struggle, we finally managed to find an open place – The Backbencher. This place felt like a college bar and had a delightful ambience and setting. My wife and I were quite pleased with the home fries, risotto and the refreshing beer, which proved to be a great respite after our long walk in the afternoon sun. A number of football fans had gathered here for the screening of a local league game, which made the atmosphere extremely lively and very English-like. I would love to revisit the Backbencher whenever I’m in New Zealand next, and perhaps experience watching a Manchester United match. Cheers!!
Passable food but extremely slow and unfriendly service. The location is very convenient though and the puppets on the walls are very entertaining. A pity that the puppets that work there aren’t. They are a grumpy bunch and I am not keen to return.
