As a dual-citizen of New Zealand and the United States, I always enjoy spending time in beautiful Aotearoa with my relatives when I visit every few years. Tonight, I wanted to enjoy a low-key evening with two of my cousins, trying some local NZ beers and ciders at Malthouse. I had heard great things about Wellington’s beer culture, and was looking forward to experiencing it. Quite unfortunately and honestly unjustly, I was refused service simply because I had forgotten to bring my passport. I did have a valid U.S. license clearly showing that I am twenty-six years old, but the bartender insisted that she would not serve me in a rather inhospitable way. Kiwis have always been known for their easygoing and hospitable nature, and I was quite dismayed. If this is indeed the law, it is discriminatory against visitors. I would not recommend Malthouse.
It’s a great place to try beers – so many to choose from. Lively ambience and you can choose to sit outside or inside at a table. Caveat – food selection is limited and you shouldn’t expect much.
