As they have a mussel special on Sunday and Monday’s, my husband and I came to check it out as he has told em that the mussels are better in NZ compared to Sydney. We were well looked after by the lovely staff who even let us sample some beer as we don’t have much experience with them. For mains we tried their blue cheese mussels and their white wine and garlic. They were definitely larger compared to Sydney and they had good flavour but i prefer some of the stronger flavours they have back at home. Still, it was a filling dinner and we couldn’t finish the two pots as it does become a bit too much in the end.
I usually only go here for double mussels on Sunday’s and Monday’s. Had the coconut cream lemongrass ones and myMate had the curry apple ones. Very hearty. The fries and mayo are delish. Had with a Stella and a hoegaarden beer. Dessert was nice – had house waffle with fruit and rhubarb crumble.
This place is open weekend among many cafes closed. As we are tourists from Auckland we just want to get lunch. My lunch was rye breads, 4 mushrooms, porched egg and 2 spinach stalks on the plate over $20. My son had hash potato and bite size bacon and bread croutons star-fry in the bowl near $20 ( we didn’t expect these) . It is Belgian cafe, I was expect much more. I don’t know this is Wellington standard or not. It was so poor meal for what we paid. If I go to Wellington on weekend, I will search more eating place.
The brunch options go far beyond your normal eggs Benedict. The price is very good considering you can buy the same thing from your local cafe but Leuven offers more variety and also is very tasty. We also had dinner where everyone was extremely satisfied with their mussels. Would definitely recommend and also come back! Also remember to bring ID if alone/with company.
Character aplenty, great food and fantastic coffee. A word of warning though – only order the big breakfast if you are really hungry! Very generous plating of some very tasty morsels. The weekday breakfast special, while not as hearty, at $9 is very hard to beat.
Had lunch at Leuven on a very recent trip to Wellington. I ordered mussels with a blue cheese sauce. Service was fast and friendly notwithstanding it was busy in the middle on the day.The mussels looked great – pity they were overcooked to the point where 1/2 of them had shrunk considerably. That’s the second time in two visits that the mussels have been way overcooked. Why?! It can’t be that hard surely. A 3/5 rating seems about right.
Great main dishes. Mussels are delicious and love the fish !!! Good service and the staffs are nice . Really recommend the mussel and sure will come back again!!
