Salamangka is magic. And the owners of Salamangka do not need magic to attract customers. Why? Because Salamangka has a magic all its own. That Magic that doesn’t require a cloak, trap doors or a set of playing cards.Because Salamangka relies solely on a unique concept. A concept that works.A concept that their Marketing Team milks the Halloween theme to the fullest. From the interior walls are eerie black murals to the otherworldly standees placed outside the store to the fully-researched names of preternatural creatures of the bar drinks with native infusions: Undin, Kibaan, Sigbin, Nuno sa Puno, Tiyanak, Santelmo, Dwende.Alright. Some of the characters do not, in any way, reflect the true theme of magic but let us not be killjoys and look at other elements (no matter how remotely connected) of the dark world. Sige na, payag na ako. Now, let’s leave the unearthly concept, and proceed to the more important. Food.Everyone in our foodie group had grown fondness for one of their appetizers, Deep-fried Kamote Chips. It’s crispy with little brown spots that give out slightly burned flavor. A flavor that gets more enticing as you bite on it (you may want to try dipping the crisps into the condensed milk). We were further served Rice Toppings, two of which, I say, are my favorite: the garlicky Bawang na Bangus with salted eggs and Tinapa with salted egg, tomato and burong mangga. (comment: They may be good but I find them too pricey).Another main that stood out was the Itlog na Maaalat Wings. Salty it was not but a tad spicy, it was. But it still gets my nod of appreciation. Now let’s go to the flipside. The soupless Sinigang sa Manggang Hilaw was a highway robbery at P279 (Oh, please remember that this dish is good only for one person). Served at a medium-sized bowl, this re-imagined sinigang has tender meat and vegetables and rice pilaf. One question: is it necessary to include bagoong? Too fusion?I’ve been saying that Vegan is an acquired taste. Sorry but I still have to acquire it. Honestly, I don’t know how to review it but, the Vegan Nachos served was a dish I could not appreciate even if my life depends on it (And seriously, nachos for P199? Just asking).I was closing this piece when a thought suddenly entered my mind. It would have been better had I reviewed the bar than the restaurant for a higher rating.Well, just the same, congratulations to Salamangka. And good luck.
