This is my second time here in Ooma and as usual, it didn’t disappoint! Aside from the exceptional food, serving was fast, servers are soo nice, place was clean and neat. Would always go back here for the experience!
We got the following dishes:- Aburi mixer: the salmon skin and spicy tuna were just normal. The Kimchi prawn with enoki was interesting but I don’t think the flavors blended well together. The truffles steak was OK – interesting but not wow- Buta Kakuni Udon: this was really interesting, with a dash of pickle-y flavor to it. There’s a chance you might not like it but I think it loves up to the Ooma fusion hype- Oyakodon: normal, typical Japanese restaurant fare- Gyu katsu curry don: meh. It was alright, nothing special. I thought the rice tasted like it was old – not the Japanese rice I was expecting and love- Hanger steak: steak was cooked well and I always love the pumpkin sauceOverall, experience was just average. Expected more because I remember sarap na sarap ako dati! I probably had lower standards before
I love Ooma but it’s been a while since I’ve been back. There are so many other restaurants popping up that we end up trying newer ones than going to old favorites like Ooma.Unfortunately there were more misses than hits during this visit. Though I frequent the Rockwell branch more, it’s not my first time here in the Megamall branch – it’s probably my 5th or so time. I was surprised I hadn’t done a review, I was already expecting to simply type in updates and adjust the rating (sadly, to lower it fo what it is now, a 3, because I’m pretty sure if based on past experiences, though most likely from a year ago, I would’ve given a 4 or 5).My favorites here are the Hanger Steak, Ebi Tempura, Salmon Tartare Aburi Maki, Softshell Crab Taco Maki and the Iced Tea.Today though I tried their new items (except for the Ebi Tempura which is an oldie but goody):1. Garlic Steak ₱498- it was too raw for my liking (although also sous vide hanging tender just like the Hanger Steak). Cooked unevenly with some parts okay but majority too raw for me and my companion. Also did not taste the teppanyaki sauce, in fact, only found out there was sauce when i read the menu afterwards. Meat is bland unless you make sure to get a crispy garlic with every bite. The only enjoyable parts were the fried oyster mushrooms. Lesson learned, I will stick to my favorite Hanger Steak.2. Spicy (raw) Tuna with tempura crumbs and gochujang mayo – valued at ₱325 but I got it for free when I presented the voucher I received via email thru their newsletter. If you buy a garlic steak, you get a freebie spicy tuna. Good thing it was free because would not have been happy to pay ₱325+SC for it. While not bad, we’ve had better (and tastier) elsewhere.3. Mushroom Chips – fried oyster mushrooms with wasabi mayo and ponzu sauce. Finally something I enjoyed from the new menu. And yes, the same fried mushrooms that topped the Garlic Steak. The dipping sauces were good but I prefer the Aligue Mayo and Herb Aioli that come with the Ebi Tempura so I asked from some extra. So good together!4. Ebi Tempura with 3 sauces: tempura sauce, aligue mayo and herb aioli. Consistently delicious, crunchy batter and delicious accompanying dips (though, as always, I did still ask for some chili oil).5. Plain rice – complimentary and refillable as long as you order a main. They haven’t changed their rice and I still have the same comment as before – it’s not what I like or expect from a Japanese place- it’s not as sticky (or not at all) as what i’m used to when having Japanese rice. I frustratingly ate it with chopsticks (even if I know it would be much easier with a spoon), because it’s the best way to limit rice intake LOL aka diet. And it worked, I didn’t finish it nor did I ask for a refill (obviously) when normally when in a Japanese or Korean resto, if the rice is good, I’d have at least 1.5 to 2 cups. BUT at least it’s FREE and unlimited! Thankful for that. Will I be back? Yes. I want to order my (old) faves again and maybe still try the other new dishes but one at a time only. My companion however will need more convincing to come back.
Went there at about 2pm for our late lunch. Good time to avoid the crowd. Place is clean. And the waiter that accomodated us smiled a lot. I like that feeling that they are happy with their work. Its a big plus. Food is great. Everything we ordered is delicious. But i loved the most is the Uni Udon. I have a weakness for good noodles. Hehehe. Highly recommended.
Hanger steak is good. It’s a bit oily though. The aburi mixer is so-so
Japanese cuisine at its best! Prompt service, artistic plating and super delicious food 🙂 We tried their Kani Salad, Salmon Tartare, Hanger Steak and Green Tea ice cream. Every item was a pleasure to the taste buds. One of the few restaurants which actually lives up to it’s hype 🙂 Though its hard to choose, my recommendations would be Kani salad & Green Tea ice cream!Updating pics of my recent visit – love that they introduced maki and sushi platters! Tried the maki mixer (Php 589), Uni Udon (Php 495) and 1 Buta Kakuni Katsudon (Php 299) – loved all of them. The uni udon is my new favourite and must try!
