One of the best Japanese restaurants that i have tried. Allergic to shrimp but my companion said that the ebi tempura was so good he kept on complimenting it. The Katsu curry was also good I just wanted more sauce. The sauce is just right I just wanted more. CHicken Karaage was good but I wanted smaller portions of it. Still good! Chicken skin and Chicken teriyaki skewers were good as well. The chicken umami soba is my favorite. I love the flavors of the mushroom. I think the mushrooms were shiitake, enoki and shimeji? Will definitely go back for this and try other stuff on the menu.Service is excellent.Food is excellent.Highly recommended.

Staff was courteous but was disappointed with their katsu curry. The taste was satisfactory but the katsu was so thin and they weren’t generous with the curry sauce.

One of the best dining experiences ever. I had a booky discount and they also gave me birthday treats! The service is really warm and friendly, kudos to the team! The food is delicious and they offer unique twists to some Japanese dishes.Their spicy tuna salad is very unique and a must try for me.I will definitely dine here again!

Fukujin Izakaya is a hidden gem in San Juan that’s been adored and raved by many because of the progressive style in serving Japanese dishes. The place has a stylistic Japanese backdrops and you can truly feel the vibe while inside. We started with the salads and appetizers as a warm-up! For the salads, we had Seaweed Kani Salad and the Spicy Salmon salad. Both salads are good and pretty interesting to the taste. No umay factor or that “greeny” feeling while eating it. I especially like the Seaweed Kani one because of the sesame-marinated seaweeds. I also like the dressing they used as it complements the salad really well. For some cold appetizers, we tried the Tuna Tataki or the crusted blue rare tuna that’s topped with crunchy garlic on bed of leeks with Fukujin house-blend ponzu. It’s pretty good, fairly-seasoned, and not slimy. Smoked duck Ala Mansi is a smoked sliced duck breast with thinly-sliced calamansi and citrus juice that’s served inside a smoking covered tray. This is one of my favorites as it’s really juicy and flavorful. The calamansi adds a sour layer to the sharp taste of the duck meat which is glorious and perfect! Then we had the Salmon Aburi maki and Land & Sea maki from their Maki Sushi selection.Land & sea maki is the killer combo of Ebi tempura and cucumber and then topped with torched beef slices. This one’s quite good and it’s amazing how these two jived along well as the flavors burst in your mouth! Salmon Aburi maki is a salmon maki with cucumber and cream cheese, and then topped with torched salmon slices. This one’s quite good but it somehow lacked some “kick” IMO. Not sure if because it was left cold for quite a long time that somehow affects the taste or something, but yeah – this could have been improved. Then we had some Nabe-meshi also known as fried rice hotpot dishes such as the Pork Curry Nabe and Chicken Kimchi Nabe. Chicken Kimchi Nabe is a Kimchi-cooked rice topped with grilled chicken and soft-boiled egg. This one’s good although I felt like the chicken was a bit dry and needs a few more seasonings? The kimchi rice lacked some flavors and some spices too. Pork Curry Nabe, however, is the best one! It’s a Curry-cooked rice topped with roasted pork belly and soft-boiled egg. I really love this one – the roasted pork belly is so crunchy and sinful! I also love the rice as it’s also more flavorful than the other one we tried. Next, we had the Umami Chicken Soba or soba noodles in creamy dash sauce with grilled chicken. It’s creamy and filling and the grilled chicken here tastes better! Chicken Teriyaki or the grilled chicken thigh with Fukujin’s House-blend teriyaki sauce. It’s the usual chicken teriyaki dish with a quite milder taste of the usual teriyaki sauce which I also like. For some kushiyakis or skewered meat + veggies, we had the Yakitori or the chicken thigh cutlets, and bacon-wrapped 3 kinds of mushroom. Yakitori sticks are good – so juicy and flavorful even on its own even though it was already left cold for quite a while. The bacon-wrapped mushrooms which includes Shiitake, shimeji, and enoki mushrooms are all good as well. First of all, the bacon was cooked just right to not overpower the mushroom. Truffle Mushroom Rissotto or the Italian-style rice in Truffle mushroom. This one’s quite filling and it’s perfect to pair with the entrees like the chicken teriyaki or even with the yakitori sticks. For the desserts, we tried the Fukujin Nori Ice cream. It’s a seaweed-flavored ice cream topped with crushed sweet corn snack. The crushed sweet corn adds an interesting taste to the green-ish taste of the ice cream which is creamy and not that sweet. Everyone seems to love the food. If I were to pick my top 5 favorites (not top 3 – because there are so many good ones), it would be: Seaweed Kani salad, Smoked Duck ala Mansi, Pork Curry Nabe, Yakitori sticks, and Umami Chicken Soba. We also had a chance to speak with Chef Paul and he mentioned that they’re focused with the “balance” taste of the food they serve which is why I’m not surprised because the food are, overall, glorious! Will surely go back here with my family very soon!

We got the ff for our first visitRoasted bone marrowTuna TatakiCalifornia makiBeef misonoVegetable TempuraFood — among the other dishes we’ve ordered, we truly enjoyed the maki; a dish that’s served by many others but easy to get it wrong too. But Fukujin’s did theirs right. The Roasted Bone Marrow was just ok too, melts in the mouth and tasted buttery. Liked it with the toast it’s served with. The beef misono is the one we’re surprised with: the cut is too thick for the dish, thus the meat was a bit hard to chew on. While serving was a bit huge than normal, still I didn’t enjoy it as much because of the meat. Vegetable tempura was great, although serving the sauce with a grated daikon would have made a huge welcomed difference to the taste. Place — the location didn’t speak a lot about the restaurant as it was tucked in the second floor of a commercial building. Once indoor, it’s neat and comfortable. Nothing too special to speak of an izakaya.Staff — attentive and prompt. While I get where the ‘progressive’ part is on their cuisine, I still feel that it wasn’t consistent on the whole feel of the restaurant ambiance.

Fukujin Izakaya breaks the mold with their bold take on progressive Japanese cuisine. The highlight of our visit was the Smoked Duck Ala Mansi – a dish worth every praise. The delicate duck cuts are garnished with paper-thin calamansi and are covered in smoke-filled glass which gives the delicious smoky flavor. Don’t ever leave the establishment without trying it.On the lighter side of the menu, I would highly recommend the Spicy Salmon Salad because of the added texture and crunch from the tempura flakes. It’s a salad bowl with some novelty that one shouldn’t miss. The Bacon-wrapped 3 Kinds of Mushroom is also something you should try. This mouthwatering plate of skewers is sinfully juicy and flavorful. Now you’re looking for something heavier, I’ve found that the Halibut Tempura shines the most. It’s partially because of the sprinkled roasted sesame that unbelievably goes well with the halibut. The Umami Chicken Soba wasn’t half bad either. It’s like a Chicken Carbonara with a very Asian feel to it. We also tried their Chicken Kimchi Nabe, but I felt that it lacked the “oomph” that is normally associated with kimchi. We finished the meal with a scoop of Fukujin Nori Ice Cream. I understand you would have weird feelings toward it after reading “Nori”, but I assure you that this is one of those delightfully pleasant desserts. If you’re a ‘90s kid, you’ll remember a childhood snack once you eat a spoonful. This hidden gem, tucked away in Little Baguio certainly make for an interesting gastronomic experience with their innovative approach on traditional Japanese dishes. I’d go out of my way just to dine here again.
