Unusualness of this place is proven by its history, which is connected with Gdansk so much, that still on the foreign tours itinerary, there is a stop on Szeroka Street with short story about the Gdansk vodka - Goldwasser. Dutch Mennonite Ambrosius Vermoolen, after he had been given the Gdansk citizenship, in year 1598 he launched the alcohol distillery, which he named "Der Lachs" - the salmon. Since then, this fish, being the symbol of happiness and prosperity, has signed all the products of this tasting room. "Goldwasser" became the most popular product made in his small factory. The dispensing of spicy vodka with swirling little pieces of 22-carats gold, had been kept in the strictest secrecy for ages, and told from generation to generation. The liquor, as a Gdansk brand article, was served on European courts. It was one of the favorites alcohols of Tsarina Catharine II. The historical chronicles in the following ages, mention the names of further generations - successors of the secret dispensing: Bestvater, Henrichsdorf, Marwitz and Wundichow. In the present time, the successor in law, and the possessor of the original dispensing is Graf von Hardenberg, the owner of Hardenberg-Wilthen AG liqueur factory in Germany. The Gdansk tasting room and restaurant "Pod ososiem" had been famous for ages, as the place full of extreme collection of jewels, paintings and furniture. Unfortunately, the ravages of Second World War did not omit Szeroka Street. Tenement-house was destroyed during the blitz, but the collections survived.
