"A journey through the time" Tradition and modernity live side by side at one of the most emblematic and trendiest restaurants in the parish of Caneas. "O Cartaxeiro" is the oldest restaurant in Caneas, and probably the oldest in the municipality of Odivelas and is a catering establishment, acknowledged as being "of interest to tourism" by the Directorate-General for Tourism. Set in an emblematic town, building and establishment - all riddled with historic references - the essential idea behind our restaurant has been to make this a unique space, based on distinctive features that make "O Cartaxeiro" a point of reference in the so-called "Saloia" culture. In gastronomic terms, we concentrate on Traditional Portuguese Cuisine, putting special emphasis on the richness of "Saloio" gastronomy. With regard to architecture, as our restaurant is more than sixty years old (60th anniversary commemorated in 2013), the building it is set in is more than a hundred years old (the first records date back to 1887), and the local surroundings have a vast and rich patrimony, the decision on what to do in this regard was virtually made for us - and as far as possible in the restoration project we tried to preserve and enrich local traditions and habits. Over the years since this establishment opened in 1953, it has retained its traditional characteristics. In its early years the restaurant was a typical tavern/eatery where customers regularly went to enjoy a glass of wine straight from the barrel, some of which were higher than a tall man, and some of the dishes prepared by Dona Ermelinda. We have sought to preserve the original style. The wine barrels - now very rare - have been kept and are still used. The food is served on traditional clay plates. The decor is rustic, recalling the traditional roots and the old habits of the area, offering reminders of the town's past history (Fountains/ Water carriers/ Washerwomen/ Aqueduct), while not ignoring the connection to the present. The surroundings evoke the past while still ensuring that our customers are well looked after and comfortable. Focused on innovation and modernity, together with tradition, good cuisine, the art of excellent service and friendliness, "O Cartaxeiro" is undoubtedly part of the culture of Caneas and, indeed, part of the "saloia" culture.
