About

A family history, connected since its early ages to the catering industry and that, on 15 May 1976, inaugurated the restaurant Caarola 1, on the side street of the Casino. This restaurant, managed by Graa Mortgua and her husband Alcino Mortgua, is a welcoming place suitable for all social classes. We have clients looking for snacks, working men looking for the dish of the day and more formal clients who wish for an elaborate meat, fish or seafood dish. This versatility allows us to create a familiar environment, where everyone feels good and finds the meal they are looking for. This family from Mortgua welcomes wonderfully and equally all clients, and makes this restaurant a truly familiar space. It has 17 employees all year round (a number that almost doubles during the summer), and it is open daily from10am to 2am. It is a restaurant where the fresh fish is the king, but where you can also eat excellent meat in a great diversity of typical dishes. The chef recommends Kid in the Oven (on Sundays), Bass Massada (Pasta), Monkfish Rice or Caarola Codfish.

We stopped for lunch in Figueira da Foz enroute to Porto. Seafood was fresh & the restaurant full of locals, which is always a good sign. Seafood platter was amazing but lobster was over cooked. Good local wines.

A vibrant and busy restaurant (good sign), where a lot of locals dine. Excellent staff and a wide ranging menu, especially seafood. Very civilised restaurant that allows smoking in an indoor annex (see cover photo). Fantastic place.

Typical Portuguese food in a traditional environment. Many locals eat here which is always a good sign. Correct and friendly service. Fresh caldeirada and corvina blessed with an enjoyable bottle of Douro Carm (rosé). Good for those who’re looking for the real local kitchen.

We had one of the best cods with patatos ever. Fish and pucanha were also excellent with 3 side dishes. Espetada (grilled meets) with salad and homemade chips were tasteful. Super homemade and delicious at 2,25€. I’d come back if I came to figueira again.
