Disappointed. Attracted by its – apparently former – status of one of Porto’s veggie staples, we booked dinner for two. The room is amazing and the waiters are friendly and professional. So far, so good. Now come the food: 1. Tasteless humus (I mean how can you get this wrong in a veg restaurant, let alone a fancy one)2. Decent rucula bread but no cigar (2 euro for a half finger long nugget of bread)3. Mushrooms “Bulhão Pato” (had high expectations): just uninspired floating bits of mushroom 4. Peixinhos da Horta (Portuguese tempura) – dry, tasteless: this is a pretty standard Portuguese snack served everywhere, everyone makes it at home, how can you get this wrong and charge that for it!?5. Golden pumpkin – a kind of soaked polenta, couldn’t make out the sauce6. Main: mash wrapped in a charbroiled sort of coating with sesame coleslaw without sauce. The effect of a veggie Portuguese cold cut (alheira) was well achieved both in taste and look. However, for 20 euros, an utter joke. Everything was tasteless. No problem with paying a bit more for a good experience, but getting ripped off leaves a even more bitter taste than bad food. Maybe it was a bad night for Em Carne Viva, but if this is all there is, it’s a genuine rip-off in a city with so many options.
