Kostroma is an ancient Russian city situated on the banks of the Volga River. The Kostroma land is inextricably linked with the works of prominent figures of the Russian culture, including playwright Alexander Ostrowsky who had an estate in Shchelykovo. It is believed that the characters of Ostrovskys play A Girl Without a Dowry are based on some prototypes encountered by the author in the Kostroma Province. Kostroma ladies and landscapes also feature in some paintings by famous Russian painter Boris Kustodiev, the author of such renowned masterpieces as Pancake Tuesday, A Merchant's Wife, and Fair. The landing stage on which the Restaurant Complex is based was immortalized by famous film director Eldar Ryazanov in his motion picture A Cruel Romance, a screen version of Alexander Ostrovskys play A Girl Without a Dowry.
