I come to this hidden gem every time I travel to Singapore, it has now become an absolute must go-to in my book. I’m pleased to report that following my most recent visit, nothing has changed, and that is great news. The food is simply first class, the staff are very pleasant and helpful, and the although the location may not be to everybody’s taste, I find it very relaxing being slightly removed from all the street level hustle and bustle. Thoroughly recommended!
Hoover Rojak is a Singaporean institution which has tantalises the tastebuds of generations of Singaporeans for the past 40 years Located at Whampoa Place, the proprietor has recently passed away. His love and dedication for his humble trade can be defined by his penultimate wish of having his hearse drive past the hawker centre before the crematorium.Standards have deteriorated since my previous trip but I am sure his descendants will persist his father’s ethos and values. Hoover Rojak is easily distinguished from other versions with its thick, gooey and generous prawn paste. The prawn paste is mixed delightfully with sugar, salt, chilli, roasted nuts before dousing onto the roasted dough fritters, cucumbers and jellyfish. The freshly made prawn paste is so refreshing and tantalising that it opens up your palate. It’s no secret they are awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand and well worth the 45-60 minutes during peak hours.Zomato needs to amend its average cost indicator eh. For a price of $4, it is definitely cheap and affordable. For a sushi eatery in Sydney, I would need to spend a good A$30. Note that Singapore has a higher nominal income per capita than Sydney/Australia.
