If you looking for good handmade noodles and authentic Northern Chinese food then this is your place. The restaurant is not fancy or near to SA restaurant standards, it’s a no frills, no fuss place but the food is the highlight. Prepare to hear some banging from the kitchen, that’s just the chef freshly kneading and cutting your noodles. Not something u get at Asian restaurants. The pictures are Shaan Xi’s homemade soya bean milk, hot oil noodles, fried onion pancake, beef soup noodles and chilli beef sauce noodles. The portion sizes of noodles are very nice as well and prices are very reasonable. My rating of 4* was mainly based on the food which is fantastic . If I’m rating the restaurant itself then it’s a fair 1*
We came to Shaan Xi after searching for the restaurant Yung Chen, which was supposed to be next door (not sure if it’s still even open?). I had a craving for authentic Chinese and thought we would give the ones close to home to try instead of heading down to Cyrildene. The restaurant is small and a little dingy. I wouldn’t suggest coming here for a sit down meal. The guy who helped us could barely understand English but luckily we could just point to what we wanted on the menu. As unappealing as the venue was the food was surprisingly delicious and authentic. I ordered my favourite dish, beef flank noodle soup, and it was really tasty. The noodles were freshly made (we could see the guy in the kitchen making them while we waited) and the soup had such an amazing flavour.So while the actual restaurant put me off a bit (hence the lower rating), the food was delicious.
