An absolute hidden gem! A place where every tea connoisseur will keep coming back. Very friendly and efficient service. Food menu which would satisfy all palates.

Such a pity that this very pretty venue is so very far from what it was when it first launched. Had to keep on waving for service, and the pastry on my chicken pie finally had me understanding how pastry could be tough. My friend’s quesadillas looked very bland, with not even a garnish for interest. Sad to say I won’t be back.

June 2019: Badly in need of a good clean and a revamp. Contessa’s is looking like a tired, old lady, way past her prime. The staff are still friendly and efficient, in a laid back kind of way. The food quality is decent, although presentation is very basic and unimaginative. The chair cushions are grimy, furniture looks worn and scuffed, and the entire place has an air of neglect. Perhaps it’s a sign of the struggling economy.March 2018: Quaint and characterful, this cafè has olde-world charm. The staff are friendly and efficient and the coffee is above average. But you should come to Contessa’s for the tea – undoubtedly one of Johannesburg’s best tea selections. One of my personal favourites is vanilla earl grey. The menu is surprisingly wide for such a tucked-away gem, with plenty of options for meat-eater and vegetarian alike. The grilled chicken sandwich with lightly-curried mayo is to die for, as is the breakfast speciality, citrus French toast.

Contessa is hidden in an unnoticeable part of Rivonia. It is so quaint and pretty. Absolutely loved the tea menu. If you are a tea drinker the variety will keep you coming back or lose you in indecision. The menu is a bit short with some interesting interpretations. I had the english breakfast which was yummy and well prepared. The french toast next to me was amazing as well as the salmon stack. The tea is served with pretty cups and teapots. Definitely a spot to take the girls for high tea. There were some yummy desserts that were listed that we didnt get a chance to try. Service was mostly attentive. Will definitely be back.

Quaint restaurant. But poor service. Poor communication. Late – waited almost an hour. We order salmon. They tell us no salmon. We order beef Prego instead and we get served chicken because they ran out of beef but don’t bother telling or asking if it’s ok – just deliver. Sorry but very poor experience.
