I went with a friend and I ordered the Nigiri platter and the California roll platter. The prices shown on the menu in Zomato are outdated as I paid R115 per platter and not R90 as shown on this menu. My review is a little more critical than most as I have actually recently been to Japan and had an authentic sushi experience. Unfortunately the restaurant owners and sushi chefs at Yamada are not Japanese so rightly things will not be the same.The rice was too sticky, as if it didn’t steam properly. The fish was not the most fresh and therefore tasty. My biggest gripe was the soy sauce. I could’ve dealt with the other issues if the soy sauce was good but even that was off. It appears to be an in-house sauce that was very sweet, no branding on the container. Soy sauce is not meant to be sweet, so that added more to the off taste of the sushi. I didn’t even use the ginger in between sushi as it was adding more sweetness to the already sweet soy sauce. And as the sushi was not good on its own, I had to use the soy sauce for flavor. Soy Sauce should taste like Kikkoman, salty and yeasty. Lastly I ordered the fried noodles for take away. The noodles didn’t seem fried, fried noodles should be dried out a little. They were good but it wasn’t from a natural flavor developed during the cooking process, but more so an MSG flavor enhancer used, notorious in Chinese cooking.The service was good. The waitress was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was also very clean. Had it not been for the latter 2 points the rating would’ve been at 2 stars.
