Fillet steak, rare to medium rare, mustard seed and pepper encrusted basting, delicious chips and Springbok Carpaccio to boot. That steak though, wow. When combined with the special basting, the chips, and the specially matched glass of shiraz (or two), it was the best steak meal I’ve eaten. Coming from an Australian that is high praise.Just the tenderness, the technique in cooking, the quality of the cut, and natural flavour was exactly what I needed on this very chilly Johannesburg night.The five stars are for the steak. The Springbok Carpaccio was also interesting, while not everyone’s cup of tea: the texture is not like beef carpaccio, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it reminded me of in terms of texture and flavour. But then it hit me (and my dining companions) – it tasted like a subtle and more substantial variation of smoked salmon. Don’t laugh until you try it – it honestly resembled smoked salmon more than game.The bottom line is this: if you’re in Rosebank and enjoy a good steak, hearty food, and bold wine – go to the Grillhouse. Pricey by Johannesburg standards, but on this occasion you do get what you pay for. I had to go back there twice to make sure, but I say five stars.
