First, let me state for the record that we are big fans of authentic restaurants serving authentic food. They don’t need to be fancy, they don’t need to be in the best locations, they don’t have to have the best service, but they do need to be hygienic with great food and reasonable prices. Quite often, this type of restaurant is a dodgy, hole-in-the-wall, off-the-beaten track kind of place in a not-so-salubrious part of town. And, quite often, this is where we have some of our best meals and I’ll give high ratings. And that brings us to Chamines, situated in a delightfully dodgy part of Troyville, bordering Jeppestown. We walked past it on a Photowalk, and the authentic interior and appeal of genuine Portuguese food had me going back at the first available moment. We went on a Saturday afternoon and were the only patrons, so there wasn’t too much of a vibe. Not long after we were joined by the local alcoholic, then another table of 4 that came in for Pregos.Service was casual, but probably right for the type of restaurant. We ordered the prawns and beef trinchado. The complimentary Portuguese rolls were fresh and crispy and, as you would expect, the home-made peri-peri sauce was pretty damn hot! The prawns were cooked perfectly, the trinchado was delicious and the hand-out chips just right.Delicious lunch for a great price. If you like authentic food, these are the places you need to be visiting.
