Don’t let the dicey location put you off. As long as you can find parking reasonably close to the hotel (there is a guard), its well worth the visit. The Troyeville Hotel is out of a different era though the feel of it is more modern than old fashioned. It has an excellent view of the CBD due to the windows all around the dining area. Authentic and very well done Portuguese/ Mozambican fare are what you’ll find here. At reasonable prices they do chicken, seafood stews, and fish superbly and you get complementary soup and bread (they do a nice caldo verde). The deserts are delicious too, especially the bread-and-butter pudding. The staff are so friendly and nice that if you go there more than once you can soon be on first name terms with them and they get to know you well.  Not mentioned on the menu posted here on Zomato is a most excellent Portuguese codfish pate served as a starter with crostini bread. It is soooo good! The only reason I didn’t score it higher than a 4 is because the chairs, while not terribly uncomfortable are not terribly comfortable either.

Clean with lovely white tablecloths. Excellent rolls and peri peri sauce. Excellent Greek salad and lovely wine. Overcooked prawns and calamari tentacles with watery lemon butter sauce. No special treat for the birthday boy- disappointing. all round.
Every Monday and Tuesday they have Specials like the baby chicken Piri Piri or Lemon herb & butter for R79 this includes a generous portion of chips with a salad and a free soup if you want too! This is like a Tasca it is simple, clean and service is good and fast, the food is good value for money and is quick and very tasty! The draught beers are cold and fresh. The Area is not lower Houghton but just ask the resident car guard to look after your car while you inside, I’ve been coming for years and the Manger is always very friendly
