If you’re looking for the freshest melt-in-your-mouth salmon in your sushi then you need to stop here. Always seen this place but never entered. quite a small shop, not a restaurant but does have a small sushi kiosk that serves amazing sushi at a good price. Inside this place you’ll find some of the most affordable fish ever. From hake to tuna to lobster, this place has it all. Was lucky to meet and speak to the store manager Gordon who was friendly and quick to make excellent recommendations. Definitely worth a revisit to see what other fish I can try.

Fisherman’s Deli is the best fish monger in Johannesburg!(I have not tried the sushi bar, but will make sure I do on my next visit)They have an incredible selection of fresh and frozen fish!  The best fresh mussels without a doubt, replenished daily.  You can get at least 6 prawns variants at any time.  They also always have incredibly fresh whole fish.  There are a number of top restaurants in the area that use their fish, and there is always a pile of orders waiting for collection! My favourite thing is that they will not only give you expert advice on what you need for your dish, but then also do all the prep for you, taking away my least favourite part of cooking seafood.I bought a selection of mussels, Kingklip and very well priced farmed prawns, enough to easily feed 8 people and have left overs, for less than R50 a head.  The mussels were cleaned and debearded, the Kingklip cut into chunks on the bone to maximise the flavour for what I had in mind, and the prawns deveined perfectly, all while I waited.I turned it into a traditional seafood paella as well as a delicious pescavegan paella.  Both were a huge hit at our dinner party!

Fisherman’s Deli in Dunkeld West Centre was opened in 1981 and was the first store opened by the group. Fisherman’s Deli is also one of the best known fish retailers in Johannesburg and for good reason, as it has won Leisure Options Best of Joburg Readers’ Choice Awards (‘Best of Joburg’) in its category at least nine times since 2003. During my quick bite to eat here recently, I had three different sets of people join me to eat their takeaways and got the rare opportunity to ask their perspectives. The insight by ‘locals’ is that it is the delicious, affordable sushi offering that keeps them coming back! As a restaurant/deli, there is only one small table out on the sidewalk (with very little ambience) and no drink selection on offer, so I can’t recommend Fisherman’s Deli for a sit down meal, but for sushi or oysters on-the-go, its a convenient quick stop in point! On the pricing side, a decent sized platter/’variety pack’ (roughly 9 – 12 pieces of sushi) will set you back only R60 – R70. *Recommendation: Freshly made, affordable sushi on-the-go!For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

I have been visiting the Fisherman’s Deli for several decades and never had a bad fish or shell fish. The staff are really helpful. This week I saw they were selling fresh scallops but to my dismay they had sold out! Pamela took my name an promised to call when they had another shipment. She did on Friday and I dashed there. They had a box of fresh Norwegian king scallops in the shells I bought 12! They were worth every penny. Thanks Pamela. Chris
