We have only eaten the buffet breakfast at tradewinds. Both in June and in October. (We have eaten dinner at the sushi restaurant- but I’ve reviewed the Lotus restaurant separately)This review is for the buffet breakfast only. The spread is huge. Healthy fresh juice combinations are made on the spot with veggie and herb add ons being possible. Excellent eggs cooked to order. There are always a couple of healthy options like bran muffins. Also one local South African specialty which changes daily.Given the number of Japanese clientele, there is a Japanese section to the breakfast buffet too. Congee with assorted toppings and noodles or something like that.Lots of cold meat, 2-4 soft and hard cheese. Some smoked fish. Hot eggs, bacon, mushrooms etc on the buffet too. There’s quite a few bread variations and I love the sweet pastry section too. There’s quite a huge variety, so even 5 days in a row doesn’t become repetitive.
We stayed at the Hilton so we went to its’ Tradewinds restaurant for the sake of convenience. It was a arguably a mistake. Service was pleasant but very slow, and staff certainly needs training. A few dishes were pleasant, like the tomato bisque which was served with very tasty fresh traditional South African roasted flatbread. What stood out especially as being awful was the gnocchi – it tasted like flour rolled into balls. For the remainder of our stay at the Hilton, we dined elsewhere in Johannesburg.
