This is one of those hidden gems. It is inside a tiny garden centre, on a quiet street in a nondescript suburb, so you could easily miss it. However, it is worth going out of your way for. They specialise in offering traditional Afrikaner fare, so you will get things like “roosterkoek” and “pap en kaiings” which you will struggle to find anywhere else. The food is good, service is friendly and the location is pleasant. Can get a bit busy at peak times on weekends, and some if the specialities (kaiings and boerekoffie) aren’t made on quiet weekdays. Worth a visit.
You are pleasantly greeted with homemade ginger beer on arrival. A very sweet touch. The menu is rather limited for choice although very authentic South African style options. Coffees were cold when they got to the table but the awesome, jam packed chicken and mayo jaffell made up for that. The chips are amazing, they taste more like mom’s roast potatoes at Sunday lunch. Overall great atmosphere and awesome food
Unfortunately not a place for non-smokers, especially with kids. Would have been nice to be able to sit outside and watch your kids at the play area and enjoy the outdoors, but the designated smoking area is basically right there. Also therefore not suitable to have your kids there, since they’ll be exposed to smoking all the while.
Was really looking forward to trying it out , however food substandard , waited an hour for a hamburger , no chicken available , staff seemed demotivated . Fresh rolls would be a good idea. Sorry to say not going back
The owner of Plaaskombuis made a very good decision in moving his venue from Bergbron to Weltevreden Road, Blackheath. It is situated in a beautiful Cape Dutch house surrounded by a lovely and peaceful garden. The menu still has all the traditional lekker kos!
