We wanted our daughter to view some animals today so we thought we’d give the Rhino and Lion Park a visit. While there we took our daughter to visit the animal crèche and the Boma restaurant was right next door. It has a large high thatched roof with a cement floor and a stone water feature in the middle of the floor. There are stuffed animals spread around the roof beams and the walls and it had a real African bushveld feeling, look and feel. A pleasant change from the beat of the City. We sat under the thatched roof in the Boma on the green plastic chairs and tables as the outside raised deck/pub was reserved for smokers. They have the best vantage by far. The waiters were friendly and helpful and their service was prompt. We arrived too early to partake in the Lamb spit Sunday menu so we settled for burgers and toasties. I ordered a Hawaiian Cheese beef burger and my wife a toasted bacon, cheese and tomato. My burger was boring, plain and arrived without the pineapple. When I pointed it out they brought me a lonely single pine in a bowl that I declined as my burger was already half finished. My wife liked her toastie though and said it was great. The milkshakes were also uninspiring and were very watery and foamy. The food is average to say the least but it gave us some energy to face the rest of the dusty park and to watch the lions being fed.
This place you would only really go to if you are venturing out to the Rhino And Lion Park. The decór is well done and really gives you that Out-of-Africa feel. With its thatched roof and animals posing on the beams. If you sit in the outside area some of the benches overlook the hippo pond so you can watch them while you eat.The service was good and everyone friendly. The food is very reasonable but some meals very average. Burgers not the greatest, and the boerewors rolls weren’t great either. I asked for mine to be done medium rare but it was so over-cooked, hard and dry. This is just not the place to send things back especially when you are with a crowd so I just ate it.I would recommend you order the steaks as those were so nice and thick, and everyone who was lucky enough to order those enjoyed them thoroughly, so that would be the way to go.Desserts not exciting so we opted to rather go play with the cubs.
Boma restaurant is one of the three restaurants in the Lion & Rhino Nature Reserve that I visited, and it is the largest of the three, situated just next to the (baby) animal crèche. A note on the baby crèche, I can think of so many reasons to visit this spot for close up interactions with a host of animals (pictures attached) including baby lion cubs, and I found it a truly special experience. The interiors of the restaurant (and pub) are made up of lots of sentimental bric-a-brac such as framed newspaper articles and trophies from hunting expeditions with two completely mismatched water features. Boma has an outside deck area above the pygmy hippo enclosure, a kiosk area for snacks, an inside restaurant seating area and the homely looking ‘Croc’ pub (with its signature stuffed crocodile above the bar). The menus are a little worn with dog ears and could do with replacing but the staff are friendly and aim to please. On the food side: Boma restaurant offers simple a-la-carte meal options such as burgers and salads but the portions are good and the prices reasonable. Their cheese burger was delicious and the cappuccino was served with cute little crystal sugar sticks which was a nice touch!
