I pre-booked a high tea at Illyria for 3pm on a Sunday. The staff at Illyria ignored us on arrival and even brushed me off when I approached them to announce ourselves for the second and third times. Our tea and cakes were only ready 30 minutes after our arrival and very hurriedly put together. We were also not served what I paid for. On querying this all I was simply told the staff said everything was fine so I must be lying – my complaints were dismissed completely. This venue is so beautiful but the service is very stuck up and not customer focused unfortunately.
Very pretty setting!! The wine list, although pricey, is good & the menu has good variety. For dinner both my husband & I had the butternut soup to start. It was ok, a bit bland though. For a main course my husband had the lamb shank, it was very tasty & tender, just a bit dry & needed quite a bit more of the delicious sauce. I had the duck which was delicious & had lovely flavour, just a bit tough – I had to ask for a steak knife & still struggled a bit. For dessert I had the ginger tart, 4 little tartlets with fresh cream. The tartlets were divine there was just far too much cream. My husband had the chocolate pudding & unfortunately it was very dry. For breakfast we started with a lovely fruit plate then I had the Eggs Benedict which was very good, apart from one of my eggs being over-cooked. The English muffin was fresh & home-made & the hollandaise sauce was great!! My husband had the English breakfast & it was fine. A nice touch was the little pastry basket we also received filled with fresh (warm) home-made pastries.
I spent a particularly relaxing Sunday afternoon in the the charming, fairytale like grounds of Illyria House. We both had an exquisitely prepared meal of chicken salad and cocktails. Everything tasted extremely fresh, vibrant and extremely moreish. The service was impeccable and the overall ambience is truly unique for Pretoria, I felt transported to a continental castle. Anyone wishing to have a very special and memorable meal Illyria House is a definite must.
