I struggle to agree with some reviews or the photos listed of this spot (I see that Francois Marais Van Zyl has already pointed that out however) but the restaurant that we arrived to is not the one featured in a lot of these photos. So I am going to start with what The Gem of the Bushveld is.. – A South African family run bar that caters for almost anyone and anything, but mostly locals.- Open 7 days a week.- Located on the Pelindaba Road in Broederstroom.- Known for their signature wood-oven pizzas. On this first visit, we chose to stick with a brandy and coke (in true local style) and a Regina pizza which was okay. Not amazing by any means. We were served by Mickey, who is a sweetheart, but sadly the man sitting at the bar near us kept using the c* word, talking about his drugs and just generally being abusive very loudly to the woman with him, which really ruined any chance of us enjoying our meal in peace. We actually moved from our original seating but he was still loud enough to be heard audibly. We ate, we drank, we left as soon as we could. *Recommendation: This really is not an amazing spot to go to and I will never return. For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza
Ahhh, I love this place so much. Once a month or so, on a Sunday, when I feel as if the weekend was just not enough, my heart craves a get away and going to The Gem gives me all I need to face the new week. Very dramatic I know, but it just seems so far away from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. The Sunday lunch changes weekly, which is kind of like going to family for lunch and being pleasantly surprised with the dish that the have lovingly prepared for you. If for some reason you are not feeling the meal of the day, their pizzas are delicious too. I love the Troviscosa. My very favourite meals so far have been the lamb ribs, short rib, chicken pie and lamb neck. Most of the meals are cooked in the pizza oven for hours, making them deliciously tender. All meals served with veggie and starch, nearly always something different. There is one waiter, Prince who is very friendly. This is not a gourmet, yuppy spot, come here for a very laid back, hearty, generous meal. Cherry on top, it’s very well prices!
Some of these photos are definitely not of this place. We always see the signage on route to the dam and decided this time to stop and have a beer. The Sunday lunch being Oxtail and veggies @R110.00 smelled and looked devine but as we had already eaten we did not try it. Friendly staff and nice venue to catch up on some sport on well placed televisions.Mouthwatering pizzas in a traditional wood burning pizza oven are also offered and reasonably priced.
Nice bush setting, food is really good and drinks are well priced, service is decent and the staff are friendly, young manager/owner gets a bit keen after a few drinks, music could be better at night when it becomes a bar. Decent for a few drinks and chow with the guys or girls and for a chilled work function.
