Sunrise Chip ‘n Ranch – ObservatoryThis meal left me perplexed. I’m still kinda confused. Here’s what I do know, their food is not as good as I remember it to be back in my younger days. I was a regular for their famous roti Gatsby. It’s not bad though, just kinda average. It is however very reasonably priced and good value for money. My bro and I ordered the quarter mutton bunny chow and my kiddo ordered a mutton roti(salomie) which turned out to be the size of his arm, literally! For those of you who don’t know what a bunny chow is, it’s a quarter or half loaf of bread that’s been hollowed out and filled with curry. Almost like a breadbowl. It originated in Durban and is uniquely South African. After a few bites, I was like nah, this food is disappointing but then something kinda magical happened. I didn’t wanna waste all the food so I just kept eating it and surprisingly I grew to like it more and more after each bite. The mutton curry had a heat that slowly crept up on me and whacked me in the taste buds. The bunny had enough meat in it and the potatoes were super soft. I don’t know if they add colouring to their food or just a boatload of tumeric(borrie) but all our fingers were stained yellow afterwards. I ended up actually enjoying it. Will I be back in a hurry? Probably not but definitely once a month at least. They have a huge menu, ranging from sandwiches, curries, burgers, rice, bunnies and rotis.

They must have had a change of ownership, as the prices have jumped and the quality dropped.  We’ve been buying the same food (chicken roti) for years, and have recommended Sunshine to lots of friends and family. The nature of a good curry is that it will differ from time to time, but it’s always been consistently good and excellent value. As I now live outside Cape Town, the craving for a roti will often start days before I visit, much as happened last week. Meetings finished, I was off to Sunshine for my curry fix. What a disappointment! A thin watery gravy and a few pieces of meat and veg. Just picking it up I could tell it was nothing like the size I was used to, and then tasting it was the final blow to the good memories, built up over many years.   Does anyone have a recommendation for a curry roti that’s as good as Sunshine used to be?

Hi. Today I took my wife for a nice drive on our way home we decided to end our day off with a nice Durban rooti Gatsby. We arrived home to sit and enjoy our food just to find that there is nothing Indian about this Gatsby. The chips is old the Gatsby is oily and it tasted nothing like a mutton Gatsby. We don’t hate just disappointed, it’s like there is no passion in the way your stuff make the food

Not the same as it once was, Roti Gatsby has since deteriorated in quality as of very recent in my belief, I try to order once a month, the past 2 months the quality of the gatsby does not serve the memory I once had before, HOWEVER my quarter chicken bunny chow, I ordered a quarter due to the fact I believed the gatsby quality has fallen I would save myself the extra bit of cash to avoid another disappointment but boy was a wrong I enjoyed it extensively and that experience I had with that bunny chow saved the rating from my behalf on this review
