“WHINE-TASTING” AT BEAU CONSTANTIA – A DISABILITY REVIEWIt wasn’t wheelchair friendly but we made it work. In fact if you want to go wine tasting at Beau Constantia and you are in a wheelchair….hold that thought.I had gone online as the website is usually the first place that I check for information and had found nothing. There was a box where you could ask a question so I did. Their answer initially elicited an “oh boy” response from me but they then offered to seat our party on their lower outside area, which was below Chef’s Warehouse, and accessible by wheelchair. Alternatively, they suggested we visit either Eagle’s Nest or Steenberg wine farms that are disabled friendly. Thank you Beau Constantia for making the effort to assist but I like living dangerously so we went anyway.Family from the UK were visiting and where better to spend the afternoon but at a wine farm situated very high up on the Constantia Mountains overlooking False Bay. A table had been reserved and a booking made for wine tasting. Sipping crisp white wine, nibbling from a cheeseboard (there could have been more crackers though) and catching up was the plan. I wasn’t going to dip out and as Dennis was prepared to sling me over his shoulder I was quite happy to roll along. The driveway to the wine farm was very steep and parking very limited, in fact all I saw were two parking bays marked for the disabled so best be ubered in or dropped from the sky. The wine tasting section is up a flight of wooden stairs, along a wooden deck and down two more steps – all accomplished with help – lucky me! My wheelchair fitted nicely on the veranda sitting area and Stella really knew her wines on offer for tasting. Not enough variety though as there were only four to taste. The atmosphere was very relaxed and mellow – it’s the place to be to enjoy an afternoon of R and R. The bathroom has a view like no other I have ever seen and worth the visit. But clearly designed without a disabled person in mind as there are no grab rails for support.I really did enjoy myself and would like to go back for a meal at the Chef’s Warehouse which is on the ground floor and apparently wheelchair accessible. Considering my situation I can afford to be gracious but I did feel disappointment for wheelchair dependant people in being faced with an up-market establishment that lacks sorely in recognising the difficulties and needs that disabled people have. They have only applied to the word of the law and not to the spirit. What is the point of having a parking bay for the disabled when there is limited access to the establishment?
Great views, wine is great and the service was top notch. Really great place to go wine tasting. Spent the afternoon here with some mates, and I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for a good time this summer!
Incredible wine. I love their chenin blanc. This lovely warm farm offers you Wifi, a complimentary drink upon arrival, breathtakingly beautiful views and the opportunity to taste for free if you post on your social media page with their hashtag. Their hospitality is great, the staff is super friendly. The seating is befitting although dress warmly on chilly days or you will get cold. Beau Constantia is one of my favourite wine farms by far!
