Absolutely incredible flavor pairings. From the potato chips fried in duck fat and the broccoli served with chorizo, to the fillet, the pork belly, and the lamb parcels, the food here is from another world. Japanese fusion at its best. The atmosphere of the place ties it all together. Great for getting a handful of dishes and sharing to try all the flavors.
Loved everything about this place! The experience, ambience, food and drink quality, staff knowledge and warmth were all excellent. It’s hard to find the combination of good food and knowledgeable staff in SA so I’ll always call it out when I find it! Highly recommend pretty much anything the staff recommends, but particularly the linefish sashimi and cheesecake!
I tried the 10-course special menu with my parents, which was priced at the R350 per person at the time. Each dish was of course very small, but I think they did a good job with the portion sizes because at the end we were all decently full and not left hungry. The flavours were very unique, similar to some of the dishes we tried at Cheyne’s in Hout Bay (same owner). We enjoyed each of the dishes immensely, with my personal favourite being the dessert. My major complaint though was the poor lighting. The main form of light was from a red neon sign that was placed on the wall we were seated against. This is the sort of lighting more suited for a bar or nightclub, not a ‘modern Japanese’ restaurant that Shio aspires to be. To illustrate the lighting, I have attached one image of the dessert. Being able to see your food properly is very important in my opinion. Anyway, I will definitely want to try them out sometime again.
Kaiseki experience is a mouth full! Enjoyed it thoroughly! Food well prepared and delivered. Could do with some extra lighting inside, a bit grungy. Otherwise, highly recommended.
