Glen Carlou produces my favourite Chardonnay and so I had to visit the farm. The wine tasting is free and the staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It’s worth visiting the restaurant just for the amazing views.
Really enjoyed our wine tasting experience at Glen Carlou Estate in the comfort of their tasting lounge. The cheese platter was lovely and the 2 wine tasting fees were wavered due to the food purchase! They also have a beautiful art gallery open to visitors to explore at their leisure. Will definitely be back to try the renowned restaurant.
Spectacular wines, excellent food and amazing staff! I would rate Glen Carlou as one of my favourite wine farms in Franshoek. The wines are all amazing, our favourite remained the Chardonnay, with rich butterscotch flavours. To eat we shared two starters; the squid and the terrine. Both were spectacular. For mains my boyfriend had the fillet which was so soft it melted in your mouth, and I had the prawns with ricotta tortellini – which was perfectly balanced by a hint of sweetness. Will definitely be back!
Most of the time, when one goes for wine tastings, the experience is more about the views and general ambiance, and the wines are usually all fairly average, with one amazing (and mostly costly) option kept for last. This was not the case at Glen Carlou. Of course, the views and ambiance were a delight, but I was also utterly blown away by each of the wines. We had opted for a tasting of our selection of five wines, but ended up trying eight, thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of the staff! Moreover, each and every wine that we sampled was absolutely gorgeous. Although white wine is usually never my go-to, I ended up walking away with two bottles of 2015 Viognier, which has the most delicious, crisp, nutty, buttery flavour. Additionally, I got a bottle of the 2015 Cab Sauv, which has rich, smokey plum overtones. Both are outstanding, especially considering that they are still so young. They also have some unique and fairly uncommon types of wine–the Viognier being one of them, as well as a Petit Verdot, Tannat, Cab Franc, etc. I absolutely recommend giving the tasting room (as well as the restaurant!) a try. Thank you for spoiling us!
