In the Mother City we are spoilt for choice when it comes to wine routes with Franschhoek, Constantia and Stellenbosch right on our doorstep. Not far from the Mother City you find yourself in Wellington overlooking at panoramic mountains that surrounds Val du Charron. Val du Charron is located on a historic estate that dates back to 1699. As you arrive you are greeted with an avenue of palm trees. What used to be an old fruit farm, is now an upmarket guesthouse, Spa, steakhouse, pizzeria and last but not least an ultra-modern tasting room. Val du Charron or Valley of the Wagon Maker was the original name of the Wellington valley. Wellington was the last town where the ox wagons could be serviced before heading over the mountain pass into the unknown. Their Theatre of Wine range offers the best of their blends with interesting stories to match the wine. We started our journey with the Val du Charron Four White Legs. A beautiful white blend of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon blanc, Semillon and Viognier. It tells the story of a mountain toll keeper would only grant a free pass to travellers riding a horse with four white legs. Many attempted, but failed. The Pinot Gris Reserve is slightly barrel fermented and adds layers of creamy and smooth finesse to the palate. The Sauvignon Blanc Reserve has a distinct berry richness with rich, earthy flavours with a delicious aftertaste. We also tasted the Reserve Chardonnay. It is fresh with honey fruit flavours and notes of vanilla. It is a hidden paradise with beautiful views – a great getaway!

On Thursday evening, Zomato invited a lucky few of us for an overnight stay, and to dine at the newly opened Piza e Vino. We slept over at the four star guesthouse which comprises of 7 rooms. There is also a 5 star establishment called the Coach House. Val du Charron has some noted wines made by the infamous wine maker Bertus Fourie with my favourite being the Pinot Reserve. This estate is by far one of the most tranquil and boasts some of the most picturesque views in the valley. Definitely a must see, stay and taste!

We were invited by Zomato & Val du Charron to stay over and review their new restaurant Piza e Vino. The estate dates back to 1699, but the farm has only been producing wine since 2006. Some of the olive trees and vines have been around for quite some time. The guest house has seven 4-star rooms which are most luxurious. There are also 3 5-star suites. Each room has its own balcony with table and chairs to sit at and relax while taking in the incredible views of the Bovlei valley. On hot days, the pool is so cool & refreshing. For some additional indulgence, the boutique spa will leave you feeling relaxed. The beautifully manicured lawns and gardens are dotted with interesting art sculpture. The incredibly tall palm trees frame the picturesque view of the vineyards and mountains. The estates wine maker, the reknowned Bertus Fourie, has the knack and nose for great wine making. With 21ha under cultivation, there are 16 varietals which produce 40% white and 60% red wines. There are 5 wines in the reserve collection and 4 in the Theatre of Wine collection. My favourite is the cabernet sauvignon. It was so deliciously smooth. All wines can be tasted and bought at their wine shop.We had an amazing time and as it was such a warm and balmy evening, we languished on the deck, chatting & sipping wine until the early morning. Beautiful place! We came to have something to eat and found the wine tasting by mistake, we didn’t even know they did wine. Really enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit.
