We had an incredible evening at Kyoto Garden Sushi. The restaurants atmosphere is so serene that it feels as if you are completely isolated from the hustle and bustle of town. This along with the excellent service makes it a special place to dine.We came in for the Winter Special and for starters we had the Vegetable Tempura which is a must have. There is nothing quite like it. I’m not a massive vegetable fan, but the batter was light and crispy! For mains we had the Udon Noodles with Duck. It is delicious. My favourite part of the meal is the broth. It is extremely impressive how they manage to maintain the individual flavours of all the ingredients whilst being immersed in the perfectly flavoured broth. The Black Sesame Seed Ice Cream was our choice for dessert. My girlfriend told the waiter that it was the best ice cream she had ever had and 5 minutes later the owner brought out another 3 flavours for us to try which were: Green tea, Miso and Ginger. They were all so unique in their own way.All in all, we were surprised by how good the experience was and without a doubt it was the best winter special we’ve had in Cape Town this year. R220 for 3 courses and a glass of wine is great value. We can’t wait to go back.
Awesome food experience at this Japanese restaurant. Started with the Alaskan crab salad, Wagu beef slices, followed with theChef’s sushi platter and I had the Kings Trio with Salmon, scallop and crab while my wife had the Fat Udon noodles with duck. Outstanding meal.
I love this place. Don’t come here nearly enough though as it would simply burn large holes in my pocket. But it’s so worth it! Stopped by without a reservation and was lucky to score a seat at the bar. Ordered the jewels of the ocean starter comprised of a fresh scallop, oyster and abalone. Super refreshing! Followed by the chef’s creation sushi platter. Sushi is a must here. It’s super authentic! Most South Africans will find it bland as most sushi places tend to fry and douse a ludicrous amount of sauce and toppings on their sushi. Here it’s the art of sushi, simplicity and freshness at its best. Making it one of my top 3 sushi spots in Cape Town. Would highly recommend this Japanese gem!
Maybe the most disappointing experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant.I used to come to Kyoto Garden Sushi regularly when it first opened, but for one reason or another it’s been a few years. In the meantime it seems to have become more popular than ever, but sadly it’s also become a shadow of the restaurant it used to be. I didn’t have sushi, maybe that’s still ok, but the cooked meals were mediocre to downright poor. Fish that tasted of nothing but pepper, crab that tasted of nothing but salt. There’s a soup called The Sea, which I used to almost dream about. It was an exquisite rock-pool of broth, made from clams, octopus, and prawns. Now it tastes like cheap powdered dashi and nothing else, and some of the special ingredients it had before are gone – no razor clams, for example. It’s under the same management, and when I told the owner about my disappointment he replaced the soup with an identical one, which I didn’t eat, and he never came around to check back in. But the soup still showed up on the bill. I’m not usually a writer of 1-star reviews, but given the cost of the meal versus its quality, this seems like the time. I hope the restaurant finds some way to get back to where it began.
