I have always loved this little restaurant but my experience today needs to be shared. Tamboers Winkel has been sold and it seems that all the usual love and attention has disappeared from there too. Service was very slow and we had to keep asking for cutlery and condiments. My chicken and emmental sandwich was served with the wrong bread, was dry and uninteresting and cost a whopping R85. When i asked about the bread, i was told that they were out of stock but on departure, I noticed a stack of ciabatta breads for sale inside the restaurant. They were also out of bresaola and prosciutto, although both these options were still listed on the sandwich board. The only reason I have rated 2 stars is because the waiter was super apologetic and the coffee was really good. Maybe wait until the new owners have settled in before giving this place a go.
We had bought a Hyperli voucher for Tamboers Winkel. It offered two pies for R 99.I must admit, it did make me wonder why l was possibly attracted to pies. I guess it was all in the secret ingredient, the one that I bake with myself, the wording!Pies are not generally my first go to food, although l am a food lover of note and l have the body to depict that. This was the most awesome experience that I have ever had with a pie. My spouse concurs. The visual appeal was the first appeal to my senses. An artistic and appetising presentation then energised my tastebuds. Firstly the pastry was phyllo as opposed to puff pastry. That immediately placed it in a different league. We both ordered the lamb pies. I must admit that l asked if it was lamb mince before ordering and was pleasantly surprised to be told that it was lamb chunks. Impressive, l thought. This was both an oral and visual treat. A real sensational symphony. Delicious, mouthwatering and heavenly.A quaint little hideaway, a true gem. This little piece of heaven is a haven for regulars who find peace and tranquility in the environment which lends itself to laptop life.A tad sad that the stress of life has come to that as to soak up and saviour this ambience would be ideal.
The fact that it’s small and cute and somewhat kinda hidden as it’s just off kloof street, it almost feels great just stumbling upon it. There was a free wine tasting of the house wine if I’m not mistaken which i enjoyed. I saw that they now served Milkshakes and Smoothies so i decided to try out their Smoothie or so I thought. I ordered a Strawberry Smoothie but I was defintely served a Strwaberry milkshake which was an anticlimax to what had been and enjoyable experience.
An adorable little spot, tasty coffee and a lovely atmosphere. ☕️ definitely a nice spot to check out if you find yourself on upper Kloof street.
