Kalk Bay only being an hour away from Cape Town is extremely easy to visit, and so I do visit rather often but never ever seemed to manage to visit the Brass Bell due to its popularity (i.e. there was never a table available). But thanks to the bad weather, I managed to get a table for two on Saturday during a weekend away in Simon’s Town. When I called to make the booking, there was a bit of confusion about where I wanted to book my table for. The Brass Bell is a very large restuarant with multiple seating areas. But this information is not necessarily known to new patrons, and I think needs to be explained, but never the less, we got a wonderful table downstairs. The indoor seating was right next to the crashing waves, and while you could see the blistering cold outside, you felt comforted by the gas heaters close to your table. Even indoors, the decor is minimalistic, with blue benches, but still very cosy.I ordered the Pasta Verdi and my partner ordered the grilled sticky rack of ribs. The Pasta Verdi was quite good, but it must be noted that it comes with fresh basil and not basil pesto as mentioned on the menu. It was still pretty good though. My partner loved his ribs. For dessert, I ordered the Cape Brandy Pudding. There was a bit of a mix up and I was initially brought a Crème Brûĺée instead of my pudding but it was soon rectified. The pudding was very warm and boozy – a perfect Winter dessert. All in all, a lovely restuarant and wholesome food.
This is really a restaurant that has stood the test of time. I frequented this place when I was a child and still do. Good fish and chips and a real vibey place despite the size of the restaurant. Waiters on their game and well managed. A must for locals and tourists.
