Had quite a good breakfast inside this quirky train, from the other reviews I’ve read it seems service and food is mixed. Ordered the usual bacon, eggs and sausages, my order was supposed to have with three sausages, but only arrived with two, before I realised it the manager was back with extra sausage, pretty sharp! Would like to come back to try the pancakes.
We had a great time enjoying this little piece of history in the heart of Kalk Bay. We specifically went for the Scones, but had to order some muffins as well, as they didn’t have enough Scones. The scones were yummy, served with butter, cream and strawberry jam, missing the cheese though. The muffins came with cheese, jam and butter. The manageress was very friendly and pleasant – there to crack a joke and if you need her, but not in your face constantly. We loved sitting inside the old coach, having a glimpse of what life would have been like in bygone years. I love these quirky spots with a story.
Kalk Bay Expresso is a beautiful old train carriage restaurant tucked away in the main road of Kalk Bay. I would say they are best known for their breakfasts. Perfectly suited for those that just would like to get away from all the buzz and enjoy a lovely afternoon alone. Prices are cheap and the food is soulfully prepared.
Should have taken heed of the other poor reviews but alas like to give places the benefit of the doubt. Felt like a cross between Fawlty Towers and being served by the sergeant major. Unfriendly service and zero people skills resulted in my wife not tipping her usual 10 plus %. The place wasn’t busy but the staff saw the need to want to clear our table every few minutes.
We love it here and we always bring the kids for waffles, pancakes and hot chocolate. Coffee and scones are great and service attentive. Old train carriage is lovely.
