A real Cape Town institution. It was great hearing stories from my parents who visited here 20 years ago when I mentioned having gone there recently. I ordered the signature pepper fillet with chips, which was amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce was definitely not the packet variety. To be honest, it does look a little run down inside but if you can look past that, you’re in for a treat.
I had such a pleasant meal at Brad’s grill on Friday night. The vibe there definitely makes you want to stay longer as the staff are all very friendly and so is the owner. The meat is all fresh and not frozen. We ordered 6 steaks amongst 6 people and they were all cooked exactly how we wanted them and the meal was completed with the perfect créme brûlée.
Some of the best steak I have had, especially for Cape Town. The pepper fillet is unmatched! The starters, the service, the host and everything else was just brilliant- especially for a supper with the boys. A little noisy for romance but the food will make up for that!
My son and I felt like a good steak and visited Brad’s after reading the reviews. I have been here several times over the years and used to think it was fair value, but I was disappointed this time. Maybe Brad has stayed in the business overlong – we found him patronising and offhand. He had plenty of time to shmooze the locals but twice when he came to ask how things were going, he had turned away before we even got a word out. The waitress (his wife?) was also possibly suffering from waitress-fatigue and could barely raise a Thanks when we paid the bill. We went early for the In By 6 Out By 8 specials – but there are only 3, and they didn’t seem that special. We found it quite expensive, given that it is an old-style, un-refreshed formula that could do with a little updating. We started with the haloumi to share – very boring presentation, quite chewy and some rather dry cranberries. I can make this better at home. My fillet kebab was tender and tasty but the veg were the same old butternut-and-spinach twosome that appears in all the old-style restaurants. A little creativity? Presentation mundane and plain. My son had the Twosome – chicken schnitzel and a sirloin. Again quite tasty but a little yawn-inducing, and at R170 not really a huge bargain. But the place filled up rapidly and obviously has its fans. We’ll rather visit one of the many newer and more creative restaurants popping up all over CT.
