Had steak with chips and pepper sauce.  The steak had a very very odd texture.  It was done as I asked medium but for some reason it was hard in texture. It did not taste like a fresh piece of meat. The chips had seen better days were salt less, tasteless and limp the pepper sauce was quite oily and every time I dipped a fry in it, it kind of just slid off the chip.  It was extremely hot inside the restaurant.  None of the fans we were told was in working order and it was too windy to sit outside.  Our waiter also seemed as if she had better things to do. My son’s dish was so, so, so hot when it reached him.  I’m always amased that waiters and even the cook don’t think further than there nose and think “you know maybe this is way too hot to serve like this to a small child”. I could barely touch his dish to spoon it out on a cold plate. For a Franschoek eatery it was quite disappointing as I know that there are endless very good restaurants but sadly this one is not one of them.

Lovely spot along the main road but my goodness it’s overpriced. I had the tuna steak which wasn’t a big portion with a sour mash potato over it. Was okay-ish but certainly not worth R225! My son had a burger – dry as biltong and smothered in mayonnaise. What kids like mayo. ..what a strange dressing for a kids burger?! My wife had a steak which she enjoyed in a smoky BBQ sauce.

Nice setting with a view of the beautiful old municipal building. We sat outside as we didn’t book which became a bit chilly as the sun set- food was not bad but I would recommend trying to get a table inside if you decide to go here for dinner.

Dutch East was our first meal in Franschoek and it was a memorable experience. After a terrible fortnight, it felt great to relax outside and enjoy a decent three course dinner under the trees next to the road. Their service was good, as was their food – not quite fine dining but a little more special than standard fare. Dutch East didn’t blow my mind, but they were a good choice for a relaxed dinner and I’d have no problem visiting again.
