Groote post tasting room was a bit of a let down to me however I feel at the right time it would be an amazing place to be. We were there on a random weekday so it was quite quiet and dull but the wine made up for it! Tastings are R25pp and this allowed you to try any of about 13 wines. I would love to return to try the restaurant as I have heard good things about it, also there is a market on the farm every now and again. Should you visit I suggest entering from the darling side as the west coast entrance is quite rough unless you have a bigger vehicle.
We had our end of March lunch at Hilda’s Restaurant, Groote Post wine farm in the Darling district. Unfortunately our attorney was unable to join us on this occasion; however JT and CH’s partners joined us. It was a lovely warm day, with an abundant birdlife in the surrounding trees; with CH identifying a Booted Eagle feasting on a dead springbok (assumed to have been killed by a caracal) on the way into the farm. CH and JT could not decide whether to the have the Bunny Chow or the Steak Roll for lunch. Eventually they managed to persuade the chef to prepare for them a half Bunny Chow served with a half Steak Roll each for their lunch!! CH’s partner decided on the Pulled Pork for her lunch while JT’s wife had the Salmon dish and I had the Steak Roll. The Roll of my Steak Roll had a lovely crispy crust. Everyone enjoyed their choice of meal. While waiting for lunch we enjoyed the Darling Brew craft beer and with our lunch we had the Groote Post Chenin Blanc. Genius our waitron was excellent. We will definitely go back there.
Stopped here on market day and it’s a nice place to come, try some wine under the trees and just chill. Staff and friendly and serve up some great wine. Will go back for another go. Distance is worth it and you well connect with the country, such as a burning hot sun and flies. Bloody flies.. they are big are a car!!
