Very disappointing is the only description that springs to mind. Having dined out at a lot of venues in Cape Town I’ve never experienced such a horrifying ordeal before. We arrived and noticed that there were two tables free that just needed to be cleared. We greeted the waitress and asked to be seated at one of the tables, she told us to wait while she cleaned the table (which we happily did), after clearing she told us we couldn’t sit there as other people have asked her for the table. We agreed and walked to the other table, after a few minutes she came to clear this table and proceeded to dust off crumbs all over me. Fine. No apology. She just walked off again telling us she would see us in two minutes. About ten minutes went by with no menus so we flagged down the only other waitress working on the balcony. She brought over menus and disappeared. Please note in this time other patrons had arrived and been served before us. We called our waitress and quickly ordered two coffees and a cheese board thinking that this would be a quick order to make. I cannot explain what it feels like to watch people come in after you and be helped before you, see them happily drinking cocktails and eating while you still don’t even have your coffee yet. We waited close to an hour with no one even coming to check on us. Finally a waiter who was starting his shift noticed us and came over to check on how we were. Then only did our cheese board arrive and shortly after that the coffees. Our waitress was emphatically telling us that it was not her fault- something no one even accused her of anyway. To cut a long story short the woefully ill equipped manager came forward and was short with us then walked off. He came back later and the conversation quickly escalated when he was questioned on the restaurants service policy. This further irritated other guests. The couple next to us woke up and screamed profanities at my boyfriend – telling him to “shut up” while the manager stood by and allowed this to happen. We spoke to our waitress and she apologized that this was how we were treated. To her credit it wasn’t her fault at all, service training needs to be improved and managers need to treat guests equally instead of picking and choosing who they should treat well. As a further note please have more wait staff working especially on busy mornings. I felt marginalized and bullied by this manager who expected us to submit to poor treatment and suffer in silence. Disgusting- you can do better.
It has been many years since we’ve been to Harvey’s. I am not a big buffet fan but what a fabulous offering. It wasn’t a HUGE variety but what was offered was great. The salads were fresh. The calamari was cook perfectly. It was tender and not oily. The mains offered a nice variety between fresh line fish, cape Malay curry, beef medallions and then fresh roasted vegetables, rice, etc. What stood out was the amazing friendly service.
The scrambled eggs had already dried out when they arrived at the table. The kippers were dry and over cooked. I got the impression that this meal had been standing for sometime before it was served. Nobody asked the table if “everything was alright”. Come on Harvey’s surely you could do better!!
Visited them last night, with fiance. Booked the 5 course dinner and wine pairing. The wine in question was Lammers Hoek.Thoroughly enjoyed every moment, well worth the money. Our stand out dishes were the soya marinated leg of duck and loin of blesbok wellington.A must and definite to go back!Service – very good!Atmosphere – relaxed!Food – excellent!Drink variety – good!Revisit – yes!
Harvey’s Restaurant is a beautiful place to have a dinner. The service was great and the food was simple. Was disappointed in the quality of food received for the price point. The prawns were not clean which left the meal tasting Sandy. Otherwise not a memorable meal but did enjoy the atmosphere. The pub has great meals and definitely had tasty food.
