Ordered their malai boti which they kept calling ‘malay’ boti which is incorrect. It’s not the best I had – portion size is aLight with about 5 pieces on the skewer.
I dropped in here with my husband to pick up a quick lunch one day soon after they had opened. The only reason we went there was because a few days prior at the Malay Restaurant a server told us that they were short staffed since they were prepping for the opening of their new delivery outlet, namely ‘Rasa Sayang’. So we were expecting the same quality of food and service here. Turns out it’s not connected to Malay Restaurant in any way other than that being the owner’s son’s new venture. Well, let’s just say it took them an hour (we were the only customers in the outlet) to prepare our order, which was fried rice and HBC. It was enough to madden me, but imagine my fury when I got home, prepared to eat, and discovered the Rs.650 worth HBC was about 5-6 pieces only! That is to say, it was packed in one of those partitioned foil containers, and didn’t even fill up the entire 1/3rd of the partition! The fried rice tasted purely of MSG, but the portion was quite large. I have rarely come away from a dining experience utterly pissed off, but this time I was. Wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t go there again.
A fairly new Indian food joint on Hill Street, run by the Malay Restaurant. They have a wide range of Indian dishes, including chicken, beef, fish, tripe, paneer, two types of biriyani, as well as fried rice, kotthu and pasta. Quite the eclectic spread. We went in for the Indian option of Calcutta Biriyani which was full of herbs and spices, as well as both curried and roast chicken and a few cashew nuts thrown in for good measure. This was definitely the better option of the two. It’s counterpart, the Hyderabad version was milder and similar to the rice from Big Bite. At Rs. 420 each, the portion was not large enough, neither was the piece of chicken. You get better value for money at other places. The curries were all equally pricey for the quantity served, ranging from Rs. 650 upwards for a portion. The Paneer Butter Masala, although coated in a thick gravy, lacked richness and flavour. The desserts again, although tasty, cost more than it was worth at Rs. 180 per serving. You may choose from the traditional watalappan to cream caramel and fruit trifle. The trifle consisted of a creamy custard base, mixed with a tiny bit of cake, topped with canned fruit pieces in jelly. They also have sandwiches and salads available for take away. The interior is small, with a bar type seating arrangement, not ideal for dining in.In conclusion, they make up for the loss of Al Bite in the area, carrying most of the dishes they had and then some. However, I feel the pricing could be a little more reasonable.
