Sometimes quiet, but rarely boring – the Tangerine (more popularly known just as the Janaki Bar, after the hotel in which it is housed) is one of the low key fixtures of the Colombo bar scene. Sometimes overshadowed by the near neighbour, the Randoli – they’ve offered reasonably priced food and drink for many many years. This is literally the bar from Cheers the TV program (not to be confused with the actual Cheers pub) where everyone knows your name – the regular barstaff who take it in shifts have been there for years and will offer a nod of recognition on walking in.Recently remodelled, the bar looks out into the Janaki swimming pool; although the recent silvering over of the outside glass has now robbed punters a view of the lobby. The food menu features items that may seem ambitious at first glance, till you remember the bar is served by the same kitchen as the rest of the hotel. Their all-day breakfast is always a great deal (even if I have never had baked beans as offered on the menu, and always been given a substitute such as sauteed mushroom). Beer and other alcohols too, are cheap for a hotel bar though exotic lists are difficult to come by.All in all, a quiet drink in the afternoon while in the Thimbirigasyaya area is exactly what this bar is made for. I’ve never known it to be sufficiently crowded that people need to stand around to be served, and if you’re from Colombo – you tend to run into surprising people here.
