Alerics Ice Cream,.. A legendary ice cream company that was originated in Sri Lanka at late 1940s (If I am correct its 1949) and has reached to its climax by opening up the Piccadilly Café at Wallawatte in 1960. But after a while it has been basically disappeared from the market and people got to hear about this place again , with the opening Liberty Arcade, mentioning that Alerics is going to be back under a new management and an outlet will be opened inside Liberty Arcade.I was really in to this history of Alerics Ice Cream, which was initiated by Alerics De Silva Wimalarathne in late 1940s and once I heard this news I had that eager feeling to visit this place to taste that historic ice cream. :)But all I got was nothing, but utter disappointment.Visited this place on a sunny week day afternoon. There was one employee at work and since I noticed that there are no ice cream cones in the menu they have displayed, I asked him for the prices of the ice cream cups. Honestly, he talked like he just woke up from a deep sleep. I was really surprised and disappointed when I heard that there are only four flavors; chocolate, orange, mango and brownie. As he said, brownie ice cream cup is priced for Rs.150, and other three were Rs.90. I asked him whether there are any toppings that we can add for the ice cream, but he said that there are no such things, just those four flavors. It was another disappointment.So I ordered a Chocolate and a Brownie ice cream cup. He just opened the freezer and said the most ridiculous thing, that a customer can hear from an ice cream parlor. He said that since the ice cream is too frozen, he cannot serve them at that moment. I was totally disappointed about the standards of such a legendary restaurant. To consider it one last time, I asked him whether it will take a long time to melt and he said that it will take few hours, without even trying. So I just left that place since there was no any other options left.The conclusion that I came in to is this. If this is the same manner that they have maintained their standards over the past years, there is no wonder that they disappeared from the market after 1960s. And from what I’ve experienced , all I can say is that they are going down on the same lane again.
