The surprising discovery of my stay in Colombo: you can actually find fairly authentic Delhi and Bombay varieties of chaat here! It is not listed on their ‘main menu’ (the takeaway one kept within easy reach from the main entrance and the one shown here on Zomato) but the friendly guy at the counter – who guessed that I was Indian and thereafter proceeded to tell me about his 2-year work experience in Mumbai – helpfully dished out another ‘Bombay chaat menu’ from under the counter and handed it to a very surprised me. Although puritans would be quick (and harsh!) to judge that eating your own country’s food while travelling abroad is a Travel Felony, there’s also something to be said for finding familiar tastes from the homeland tingling your startled taste buds out of the blue in a foreign land. Since it’s on the famous Marine Drive, you could drop by this extremely unassuming and basic-decor place for a quick chaat before you stroll over to the sea-facing end of the road and wonder how there’s a railway track running right next to the road without so much as a separating fence!
